Broken rear shockie pin and spring popping out

    Hi all.
I have now broken 2 rear bottom shockie pins in the last 4 months. The pin on the drivers side has completely snapped off 2 shockies.I have 2 inch heavy duty Dobinsons springs which have given me a 2.5 inch lift and have kept the standard shocks but have custom made drop plates on the top which have lowered the top mount by 65mm.The standard koni shocks length is 585mm from centre of eye to centre on pin, what length are long travel shocks normally ? One thing I am not sure of is what actually limits the spring drop in the rear,is it the shockie that stops travel.I ask this because after the shockie has broken, the top of the spring has popped out from its seat and on both occasions I have found the spring half out of its seat.Is the best solution to hold the top of the spring in place so it can't pop out again and if so what is a good way to retain the top of the spring?.I am suspecting the shock length I have in at present is too short,I wouldn't think the bottom pin would break from bottoming out if the shock is too short.Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks
    Shane

it is the shock that limits droop, is it flexing hard when it breaks?

shocks bottom out all the time as they are normally the 'stopper' on your rear suspension.

a 585mm shocker is about 23 inches which is normal for a small lift when a dropper is used for the top.

so I wouldnt expect that would cause your bottom pins to break all the time, regardless of how short or long the shocker is.

tieing in the top of the coil might take some pressure off the shocky when it bottoms out but you shouldnt have to do this normally.

you must have something else going on there, I've never heard of this problem before sorry Shane

    Thanks guys.
No it is not flexing much,it has happened from normal driving,no off road work lately.I do live in the bush and drive on very bad pot holed dirt roads a lot.I did think the shock was the drop stopper so all I can think of then is maybe the angle the shock is sitting at now with the top drop plates.I have to get new shocks now anyway so might just take the drop plates off and buy longer travel shocks. The main reason I put the drop plates on was to keep standard shocks so if anything happened while travelling then I could always find an easy stock replacement from a wreckers to get me out of trouble.I also just remembered that my old Rangie used to chop out rear top shock bushes often due to the shock stopping the suspension drop but never did break a shock mount mmmmm.

Do you have the washers on the right way around? I snapped a couple of rear shocks a the top eye on my 90 before I was educated on which way they should be.
I can remember the top, and I think the bottom follows the same pattern, the dishes should face outward, then the bush can squidge, othwise it gets crushed, locks and breaks.

Another thing may that the mount has ovalled or enlarged, letting it float a bit too much maybe and introducing some shock loading? I'm not convincing myself of that though...

    Code:
                      bush+-+
                xxx | xxx
                  xx +------v x +-----+ Nut
                   xx| | xx +---+v
                +---x|------|x---|-+ |
                | x| |x | | |
                +--xx|------|x---|-+ |
                   x | |x +---+
                xxx | |xx
               x +------+ xxx <-+
                ^ xxx |

Thanks Steve,I do have the washers on the right way.I think manchild's tip may work with knocking of the bottom cups,I think that would free up a bit more flex for angle changes as the suspension compresses.I might buy a pair of cheap second hand shocks for now and give it a go,I don't wan't to beak another good shock.I have broken 1 old man emu and 1 koni now in a few months, the koni's were off my old Rangie but still in great condition.Hope I get it sorted out.
