    Tiny coolant leak

    Howdy

I was mucking around fixing glow plugs today and I spotted I have a tiny leak of coolant coming from behind the alternator to one side of the p-gasket.

It is probably sacrilege to even suggest this, I'm wodnering if one of those radiator sealants like K seal might fix this? Or will that run the risk of stuffing the water pump or blocking the water case around the engine?

Whilst not exactly answering your question, I too had a coolant leak in the same area. So I ordered a new P gasket and today pulled it all apart, only to find that the coolant was coming from the tell-tale hole in the water pump, obviously the seal has failed. How the coolant got from that point to flowing down the block????
The P gasket was in perfect condition when I got to it.
So all I'm suggesting is confirm where the leak is originating from first.

That must have ticked you off a bit Lostland,

Had a good look at the leak and in my case it is the p-gasket as I can see a little vapour escaping along with a little coolant.

Have bitten the bullet and ordered a p-gasket, just wouldn't forgive myself if I cut the corner using a radiator sealant only to blow the head after stuffing the water pump.

How long did it take you to get everything off to get to the p-gasket and then put it all back?

Have you tried nipping the bolts up a mickey hair, you may have a loose bolt or 2, I had a strange ringing noise near the pump, turned out to be a water pump bolt, somehow, had come loose and worked it's way out and was rubbing on a pulley causing the ringing sound, regards Frank.

    Mark,
It took me about five hours. I'm sure people could do it quicker, but I took my time making sure the mating faces were clean of old gasket. A 3/8 drive torque wrench and a 32mm fan spanner are the only special tools you'll need. I also used the belt and brace approach-in that I used Permatex #3 gasket sealant on the P gasket and water pump cover.
Best of luck with the job.
