What Exhaust Gas Temperature Is Normal?

I bought a D1 not running Tdi had spun, big end bearing. Im in the middle of doing a full engine rebuild with nothing missed, every thing replaced. Water pump, all bearings, reco head, radiator flushed and all new timing gear.

After reading alot of threads on this website ive ordered all the critical gauges and getting a 4 gauge pod made up to cover that pocket in the middle of the dash. ive ordered Exhaust Gas Temp, Water Temp, Oil preasure and boost preasure.

So i having never had a running 300Tdi i was wondering:
    What EGT everyone is getting?
    What temp people get towing?
What the get in the city idleing around?
What they get open cruising on longer runs at highway speeds?
    What temp is excessive?

    What EGT everyone is getting?

It varies continuously, and depends on many factors.
My probe is in the blanked-off EGR plate, but others have them downstream from the turbo.

What temp people get towing? MAX ~600C up Gateway Bridge 105km/H 5th Gear towing camper trailer ~1200kg

What the get in the city idleing around? 230-500C

What they get open cruising on longer runs at highway speeds? 480-550C

    What temp is excessive? >700C

Shutdown at around 220C after a run.

I did a test on a long hill before I tweaked the fuel pump and found that EGT increased quite a lot after tweaking.

Max temp at top of hill b4 tweaking = 553c

Max temp at top of hill after tweaking = 696c

Measurements taken same day with same external temp and with no trailer in tow.

After hooking up the 1200kg trailer I noticed the temps would climb above 700c and even above the recommended 720c max by the EGT sensor supplier. I decided to back off a bit of the fuel pump tweaks and have now found a happy medium between power and EGT and just have to watch the gauge on really long steep climbs.

If the fuel pump set to the standard settings then I don't think EGT's are a problem and in my experience its only after tweaking you need to keep an eye on the gauge.

    Cheers

My EGT is in blanking plate, bent to get into flow.
    Idle sits under 200
City driving up and down to about 500
Pushing hard up hills climbs as revs fall and up to 650
Loaded up hill foot to the floor it will just climb 700, 720, and up. Change down or back off it drops quickly.
    Not what I expected.

    I use EMS1

This gives you an idea of EGT on a fairly short hill. Involves a standing start from the bottom of the hill. (This is only been experimental and still to be confirmed but should be fairly close).

It shows EGT(Blue), manifold pressure (Red) and Lambda/Oxygen content.
