Thread: Disco 1 main mechanical problems

Unfamiliarity with the way LR engineers do things # 1 way to stop a LR.

Translation: Once you are familiar with the way LR engineers have set things up, a Disco should get you home all the time. That's not to say you won't break things ( By accident or intention) but all the information to keep it going is readily available. First port of call should be the 'Shop' section of this forum and get a copy of a Workshop manual and a Parts Manual on CD. (Note: your VIN should have an MA in it. RAVE is the right WSM. If it's LA get the 'pre-update' version) You can then familiarize yourself on how to R & R most parts and diagnose something before it gets serious. Then, by cross referencing by either part number or the word-string LR uses, this fourm can provide the shortcuts and 'fixes' others have encountered.

For example, replacing the Lucas ignition amplifier on the dissy with the Bosch 024.

Can't say I've ever broken my d1 where it prob wasn't my fault, I'd say for how I e treated it and where I've taken it it's pretty reliable, I've never been stranded anywhere and I will be getting another disco (looking at d3's now)

Disco 1s seem to be a pretty balanced design, nothing in particular gives up more than any other bit. Most failures to proceed are due to age, lack of maintenance or heavy footed abuse. If you start on the Big Tyre route, you may also start the constant breakage/upgrade route which never stops..

Electrical failures include ignition (replace amp with a Bosch one or carry a spare Lucas one) alarm spider (bypass) or alternator.
