Ok topped it up, took 300ml's :/

Was working perfectly when cold, then after it heated up a bit it started doing the same thing, i then stopped and put it in reverse... wouldn't go in... bit of playing with the lever and it went in (first time this has ever happened)

So i think i'll send it to the Auto place, next question is which one... ATA was mentioned earlier, however would be nice if there was a recommended place a little closer to Hurstville.. does anyone recommend any particular place for ZF boxes? And hopefully the people know Land Rovers.

    Cheers

Start with a drain and replace, you need to know how bad the box is. I'd it improves with a 50% fluid change and doesn't have fiberous material or copius amounts of metal in it then a full flush will probabley buy you a heap of time.

I've got a line on a believed to be good auto that would put you in the position of being able to have it checked out then 1:1 it into the disco

Cheers Dave, i'll probably send it away to get done, I'm confident with everything in the motor department, just not so much with autos. Depends what the quote is like i guess, could always learn how to do it

Cheers mate, I'll keep that in mind, however if the flush/change inproves it i might move the vehicle on for a manual td5 if things work out, if the auto goes kaput I would be looking at putting a manual in the car.

    A twist in the tale!!!

Well after not driving the D1 for a week due to fear of my transmission imploding on the way to a HSC trial exam i took the car out tonight. Still doing the same thing, taking off slowly then biting.

    Then i had an idea....

Locked the auto in to first, took off smoothly and nicely then went up through each gear until i hit 80 clicks. So i stopped and started in drive, gave it a bootfull and it did the same as before, took up slowly then bit, stopped again, now took off very slowly with the car locked in to second instead of drive, all the way up to 50 with no change!!!

The bloody thing is starting in second gear!!! And kicking down when it needs to....

So i'm happy that ive worked out the problem, and i assume this means the auto is just out of adjustment then... (i hope so) and everything can just go back to original with a little twirling of spanners...

Anyone know how this should be rectified?

    Cheers

It has a flipped Sprag, [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sprag_clutch"]Sprag clutch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

that is explained by your ability to drive OK when shifting up through the gears manually.

Sorry requires a rebuild to rectify I'm afraid. The Sprag housings weren't even steel, plastic was used in these later boxes!!!

if you need to keep the vehicle on the road when I get the vehicle in thats got the dead engine in it (tdi) you can grab the auto from that send it off for rebuild then install it straight into yours and I'll take your old auto as is (Im going to do a strip down on one as a howto and whats what).

you might even get lucky and the auto in the vehicle Im getting may bench up as ok.

    drop me a line.

Also any ideas on what a ZF costs to rebuild??

I might be better to wreck the car, but then if i go to that effort i might aswell put in a manual and make it into something fun

Although its not the right thing to do i think I'll just try and sell it... hopefully get what i paid for it (its is very straight and clean, was my aunties pride and joy). If not then i'll explore other options...
