Id say the light ur talking about is for the locker and that the disco is constant 4wd
I recently had a low k auto and transfer put in my disco after my transfer crapped itself now the mech that had it took a bit over 3 months to do the job and it's not a good one hence I haven't paid him but that's another story
My prob is now the 4wd light doesn't come on and it feels like its in constant 4wd ie when I do a u turn or turn the steering wheel too much the wheels chirp
Any idea on what the prob is? My disco is a 95and the auto and trans came out of a 96 so it should have been the same
Id say the light ur talking about is for the locker and that the disco is constant 4wd
What he said ^^^^^^^. All D1's are constant 4wd. If it's chirping around corners it's probably the center diff lock engaged. Try moving the little lever left to right. If that does nothing when the engine is cold ( so you don't burn your self) feel on top of the transfer case above where the front drive shaft fits for the diff lock actuator nipple. Make sure the linkage is moving there and secured. I the linkages are stuff you can manually turn the nipple with a 10mm spanner to disengage it. Do a bit more investigation and see what you can find.
Cheers, David.

i know they are constant 4w4 and its the cdl light thats not coming on ill try the rest thanks dave
Hi Dirtdawg
To check if the centre diff is unlocked when the transfer box lever is in the unlocked position.
On level ground with some suitable chocks around the diagonally opposite side wheel, jack up one wheel, free up the transmission with auto in neutral and hand brake off.
Then spin the jacked up wheel, doing that the gear train should move freely as it isn't locked by the park position of the auto or the hand brake.
Now place the transfer lever to the CDL lock position and try spinning the jacked up wheel, it shouldn't spin as the front output shaft is now locked to the rear output shaft and the axle with both wheels still on the ground is stopping the locked together dive shaft's from turning.
With the light, there can be two plugs on the wiring loom that are in reach of the CDL lock sensor switch, the other is for a transmission temperature sensor and that sensor may not necessarily be fitted in your model.
Check to see if the plug and socket has been coupled together without a heap of dirt in the pins, then try your lever to see if the dash indicator light comes on. Bear in mind that the CDL light bulb maybe blown but given that it doesn't get used much that is unlikely.
For a quick check for the wiring and that bulb, you can link the two pins in the coupling for the CDL position switch together, the bulb should be illuminated.

the cdl light was working fine until the auto and transfer was changer over
Have you had a chance yet to do that test I outlined, to see if the CDL is locking?
The transfer box just might be the one that has no mechanism to be able to lock the centre diff.
If that is the case, have you still got the old auto and transfer box as that mechanism should have been changed over?
Still do that test for the wiring, mainly to rule out any fault there, as with a bit of luck it may only need the switch adjusting.

Yep I jacked up the rear drivers wheel and put it in n it's definitely all locked up (I was pretty sure it was) I can see that the linkage's are hooked up, also I can put it in 4h and 4l and it's working it's just when I put it back to where it should be when it's out of 4wd it stays locked
True!
Now for the what if. What if the LT230 transfer now fitted was from a mid range D2?
In Dirtdawg's case, I would still would be looking for a loose or poorly fitted CDL selector mechanism though.
It's interesting that the CDL indicator light isn't on continually, as you say, the CDL is continually locked so the light switch should be in the on position also. Still do that test on the wiring to see if the bulb works, as if it dosn't the bulb may have simply been taken out.
