    Gearbox Rebuild

After a particularily nasty hill climb with a farily hefty trailer on the back over the weekend it looks like I'm up for a rebuild on a 1996 300TDi R380.

Any ideas on what is a reasonable price for a full rebuild?

I rebuilt my R380 (TD5) box on the weekend.

I guess the cost would depend on what's broken, and what else you refresh (other than what's broken) in the box while it's apart.

    What are the symptoms?

FYI - I was quoted around $2,800 for a refresh of all bearings and synchros in the box. That also included a new layshaft and 5th gear layshaft gear. But that was also with me dropping the removed box in.

What's your mechanical ability or ability to learn? Do you have access to tools? Would doing it yourself be a possibility?

It's certainly a lot of fun...

i'm planning on ordering an R380 from ashcrofts in the UK, 495 pounds or so plus shipping, totally reconditioned

    beats most prices in australia!

Team FA, time is the issue with doing it myself, not enough of it. Symptom wise lots of grinding, difficult to engage gears, especially 2nd, shuddering under load and a horrible shredded bearing noise.
    Pretty much knackered

Jazza I've just fired off an email to DLS in Derbyshire chasing a quote including delivery, will let you know what it comes in at.

This quickly turns into 900 pounds as the 495 is an exchange unit

350 pound core charge, but it would be simple to buy a used r380 from UK ebay and have it sent to ashcrofts as a core exchange

would be tons cheaper than 350 also
