    Oh knowledgeable ones....

Brain picking time if you would be so kind.
Does anyone know what years and models of R380 are interchangeable with a '96 300TDi Disco? ie Defender, P38, Disco v8 and the various years?

    Greatly appreciated, once again

Without major mods, none. Even the Tdi R380 is very different from Defender to Disco

Thanks JC, how about an R380 from a '97-'98 300TDi Disco or from the Series 11 Disco?
I'm trawling through the archives now but it's a fair quagmire....
    thanks again,

I always thought that so long as you were going same to same (IE tdi-tdi) that you could swap between the disco and the defender but you only had problems if you wanted to go from tdi-v8.

That said I've only ever replaced gearboxes with off the shelf items or pull rebuild and replace scenarios.

The Tdi transmissions will all bolt up and work OK, BUT due to differences in shifter housing positioning and in the case of 200Tdi Defender the bellhousing is wrong length, they will not interchange from Defender to Discovery etc.

The procedure to change said shifter housings involves disassembly of the trans and a different set of shift rods and forks installed.

Id've thought that if you had both boxes that you could exhange the rods and the forks from one to the other..... Knowing my luck you can but youd have to have the same suffix box and I'd wind up with the only incompatable suffixes.

that is a no, input gear/shaft is different. Stick to disco one with same engine, there are about 5 years that will be suitable
