They are what they are and by todays standards they are thirsty as a vehicle, Does this make them a bad thing?

    Nope.

All the info is out there to keep these old girls in great condition and functioning in some cases better than they did from new, But they are expensive to own as any 4 wheel drive is and people need to accept this and move on or buy a Corolla.

The injected versions are pretty well built and overcome a lot of the Carb'd versions shortfalls with better cams and longer tuned length intakes but they re getting on a bit and need love and tweaking.

Get it right and they are a sweet sweet thing, ignore it and bitch at your peril.

And if you dont want to get your hands dirty or you cant afford the fuel then sell it and take the beige option. (Or buy a diesel)

    Simple.

It's up to the owner whether they want to retune to suit the current state or go ahead and replace everything that wears in the hope it'll help.
Hi, please what would be more convenient/cheap (through a car shop), to "re-tune" it or replacing valves (if hopefully is enough)?
    Many thanks
