There's a switch at the top of the gear box where the gear stick meets the box. (Need to get to it from the centre console in the vehicle) The switch has two wires (+-) and is adjustable with a spanner. Sounds like it needs to be wound in a bit to make contact. Make sure you tighten the nut again as it can vibrate loose if not tightened.

    Cheers

Not in a 1995 R380 transmission, the switch is on the LH side of the trans, and a little difficult to reach. You may find by removing the copper washer under the head of the switch and applying thread sealant to the thread to avoid leakage will give you enough extra length into the trans to work OK. It is wear and tear in the shifter housing and the shift rails inside the trans that causes it.

Interesting, I'm asuming the one I fixed on a mates D1 mustn't be the original box.

Aaah, you aren't entirely incorrect though; the lt77 5spd has the switch where you described, but that model only ran from 1991 to 1994, the OP has a 1995 which run the R380 trans.

Have a similar problem on a 1998 disco tdi R380. Is this switch adjustable as well? I forgot about it, should have looked at it when i changed the clutch the other week. Can it be accessed from underneath without removing the console?
    Thanks in advance

The copper washer removal is the usual standard fix. Sometimes if you pull the switch out it has been worn down on the end so a new switch can have the extra length required to operate correctly again. If no real wear then it is the copper gasket way.
