    Transfer lever grease nipple?

    Hi guys,
Is there a grease nipple for the transfer case lever on a D1 auto V8? The lever is a bit stiff and i am sure I read it on here somewhere but I can't find it anymore. I have taken apart the centre console and gone all the way down until I got to a steel plate that has about 8 rivets holding it in place. Do I have to remove this plate? I thought I would double check before I continue to dig deeper and have the car in too many pieces.

Any help is greatly appreciated as I only picked it up 2 weeks ago so just trying to do as much preventative maintenance as I can while also modifying it along the way.

    Cheers,
    Damo

No grease nipple for the hi/lo.difflock lever. Get yourself a RAVE workshop manual on CD ( See Markets section). That will keep you going.

    Smile Easy fix.

As he said, no grease nipple, yes you will need to drill the rivets out of that cover plate remove it and you will see the mechanism exposed by which you move from Hi to Low range and do the CDL thing. You may have success simply dousing the whole mechanism with WD40 and moving the lever left to right many times whilst spraying more WD on the bearing surfaces, that could do it.
What I did with our D1, after trying unsuccessfully to spray it and free it from underneath the vehicle was pull out the console, remove that closure plate on the tunnel, unbolt the transfer lever mechanism from the box, (ours is manual but I imagine it is much the same on an auto) and washed out the dirt and dust, cleaned up the bearing areas and lubricated them with grease, have had no further problems, the shift H-L and CDL all as smooth as silk now.
Tip....... use sheet metal captive speed nuts and PK screws (Supercheap) to fasten that closure plate back in the tunnel, makes it easier for future removal and is tidier than the "pop" rivets, it is after all a Landrover, and you just know you'll have to open it up again for something.

Thanks for the quick replies, I will definitely follow both of your advice. Now it makes a lot more sense.

Ive heard that you need to seal up the plate when you reassemble, especially if you do deep wading. No need to introduce another leak.
Wipe the trans hump with Vaseline and apply a bead of silicone to the cover before you screw it back down. The Vas stops the silicone from sticking but lets it make a water/dust proof seal that is easy to remove later if need be.
