Except in the case of the covers on locking wheel nuts, one doesn't remove those caps - just use a 27mm socket.
The lock nut, if fitted, is indicated by a depression in the centre of the cap.

Might be a silly question but have searched but dont seem to be coming up with much of an answer. I have a 96 model D1 with factory alloys. The wheel nuts have what seems to be a silver/chrome cap on them. Is there a tool that is used to remove these before taking the wheels off. I dont want to damage them as the car is in good condition all round.

The covers are stainless steel and while may scratch they obviously wont rust so just as Ron said above use a 27mm socket on a long bar as a wheel brace.

There is a removal tool for the lock nut cover, it is a black plastic tube with barbed fingers at one end that you slip over the lock nut cover. The barbs get in under the cover and allow you to pull it off revealing the coded lock nut. If you do not have one nut on each wheel with a dimple in the center then someone has replaced the lock nuts with standard wheel nuts. A common replacement or modification to the factory configuration. Replacement is usually as a result of a difficulties getting the lock nut undone or as a prophylactic measure.
