    300 tdi intermittently smoky

    Hey again,
I think I'd be a bit lost without the knowledge of u guys on this forum so thanks heaps in advance. My disco has an odd annoying problem. When I start it in the morning after its been sitting overnight it takes a little to get it started. Once started if I hold the accelerator at around 1800rpm it has a slight miss and
spews out a unpleasant amount of blue smoke. U drive it down the road for 5 mins pull over and try the same thing, perfect no missing or smoke at all. Sometimes while driving it I notice it blowing blue out the back then seems to stop. Basically comes and goes. We've double checked the timing its spot on, have replaced glow plugs, cleaned out water seperator (which was filthy)and replaced fuel filter. I was thinking it could be injectors? If anyone could point me in the right direction I'll give u a carton of our finest beer next time you're in Tas!
    Thanks again - Adam

blue smoke is normally an indication of oil being burnt.

I forgot to mention it has around 260000 Kim's on it. We had the head off her last year and it all looked sweet inside. I've always ran diesel conditioner since I've owned it (4 years).

if it does it after sitting overnight, the blue smoke could be oil leaking down from the valves and getting burnt

gets my vote, It could also be exessive oil pooling in from the crank case venitlator or the turbo seal. To check remove the hose from the intercooler to the manifold and try to start it again. If its still smokey on startup then its an internal engine problem, if you cover the inside of the engine bay with oily goop from the intercooler hose its either the venitlator or the turbo.

Sounds like valve stem seals to me! When you had the head off did you recon it, or just face it and throw it on? Valve stem seals are absolute piece of **** on these motors

My 300Tdi 130 was doing a very similar thing up until recently - belching what appeared to be oil smoke when cold. I suspected valve stem seals as well, but the thing that fixed it was, believe it or not, replacing the timing belt. I think it had about 100 000 km on it, so "overdue". There was a significant increase in power after the change too, so I guess mine was rather stretched.

Yeah well its been quite a long saga with this motor but basically we took the head off to get it skimmed, couple of new valves, new stem seals, new head gasket and all new timing upgrade kit. Overlooked the tension on new belt and put far to much on it resulting in the belt snapping at just 10000 kms . So new belt and gaskets again this time with correct tension, its only been running for a couple thousand kms but ever since snapping the belt it has been smoky. Think I'll check the valve clearances as we never did. As I said in earlier post I thought the timing was retarded so we checked it all again and it is perfect.
Thanks for the suggestions plan is to get stuck into it on Friday night, I'll let you know how things look!
