Question Series 1 Disco headlight problem

I am having trouble with the headlights on a disco series 1 200TDI.

When the lights are turned on only the park lights come on.
If I flick the stalk onto pass the lights sometimes come on but not very often.

I am thinking it may be a problem with the main headlight relay!

    Any suggestions?

Possibly a problem with the headlight stalk on the steering column. All power for the lights goes through this switch If you fit brighter than standard light bulbs you can melt the switch. Worth checking this out.

I am still a little new to my Disco, but like most cars, I would assume that the switch doesn't see a great deal of current as it just supplies a nominal current through to the relay which actually supplies the power to the headlights.

The reason for this being that most traditional "switches" can't handle the amount of current that is drawn by your headlights.

I could be wrong, the Brits did build these things, but that is just how it normally is.

There are no relays for the headlights on a D1, the switch indeed melts. It may be possible to remelt the contacts into place using a soldering iron. You should then definitely fit some relays to the output side of the dipping switch assembly, in the column. You will find the two thick wires are blue/red stripe and blue/white stripe. Cut them here and fit relays with a power source from a trusted battery supply with a decent size fuse on it.

It sounds as so the switch has melted. I fitted different globs and incurred the melting feeling. Easy enough to replace about 30 minutes work. The stalk itself is about $150 for a aftermarket one in Melbourne.
