Judge My Plan of Attack - 33's on my D1...

I want to endow the Disco with some larger Mud Rubber, Currently its running some 265/70-16 At's, and whilst they are good on the road, and OK off, I want to toughen it up a little (cosmetically ) and make it more capable off road...

Ive been doing alot a calculations and spent alot of time on the 1010 TyreCalc Tire Size Calculator - tire & wheel plus sizing
sizing up different options in both a 16" and 15" tyre, and I think im going to settle on a BFG KM2 33*10.5-15.

Here are some calc's ive done (actual tyre size from BFG Spec Sheet)

    • 265/70-16 = 30.7"
    • 265/75-16 = 31.65"
    • 285/75-16 = 32.83"
    • 255/85-16 = 33"
    • 33X10.5-15 = 32.5"

Seems to make sense to me that the 33X10 is about where I want to be, somewhere in between a 265/75 and a 285/75

I would of liked to stick with a 16" rim, as it seems to open up alot more Tall Skinny (er) tyres than going with a 15, but I already have a set of -25 offset 15's with RockToy rim Protectors welded to them, so thats one less cost associated with the mod. It should fatten the old girl up a little, and let me re-claim the steering lock that Ive lost with the current rubber.

Now, from the weeks ive spent trawling through the copious ammounts of threads of tyres on d1's, it seems to be the genital rule of thumb, that 33's will require a guard chop, and a RnP change, 4.11/4.12 should bring me back to somewhere near stock, correct?

    Question:
Will a 33 X 10 require a full flare kit, or could I get away with a D2 style "flare" Is it the WIDTH that causes the drama's when going to such a tyre, or WIDTH, given that 99% of 33's are 12.5 wide?

    Question:

Which are the better R%P's to go with? Ashcroft, or KAM? and Why? (Or Other?)

    Question:
Where is the best/cheapest place to get em, AND, am I any better off getting them from across the water??? UK, States???

    Question:
If I get a set of RnP's from out of the countr, am I best to get a set of
flares sent over at the same time?

    Question:
Given that the steel rim + the rim protector + the larger rubber will be adding alot of extra un-sprung weight, would there be any benefit in upgrading shocks at the same time? (currently running OME's that came with the lift)

Cheers all, feel free to bestow on me any additional info U think I may benefit from.

    Rob.

PS, attached is a (rough) pic of the steels with rim protectors, wearing my old 31,10.5 rubber.

I ran the equivalent of 33/10.5x16. I ran them on standard offset RRC rims. I did not need to cut the guards and tucked nicely. I had to modify the mud flat bracket though. The turning circle was rubbish though but you get use to it.

So wether you need flares or not depends on what offset you end up with.

Also you are doing the right think changing the C&P ratios. Mine really struggled on road.
    Cheers, David.

    Hi Rob,

I just put 285/75R16 federal couragia mud terrains on my D1 2 weeks ago. I ended up going for 0 offset rims from LRA as I did the calculations and -25 were just going to make the tyres sit too far out of the guards even with a flare kit. I ended u doing a flare kit and cut the gaurds at the same time and they just sit inside the flares barely so I think -25 will sit outside the guards. I ended up going with the 16" wheels as it gave me more options and tyre size was cheaper. I figure that's because it's a more common size on other 4wds. I can try and post some pics tomorrow if you want so you can see how far out they sit.

    Cheers,
    Damo

Damo, pics would be sweet, that should give me half an idea what Im dealing with. I also would prefer to run a 16" rim, but I already have the 15's handy, plus they have the rocktoy rings on them which are 50 bucks each, so to do the same thing with a 16 would stretch the wallet just way too far!

Are you planning on changing diff ratios to suit the bigger rubber???
