Is my auto a done for?

Hi all, I was after a little help in figuring out what might be wrong with my auto. It started a couple of months ago when it would do a funny little dance changing out of 1st when on wide open throttle (4.6 D1). It would go into 2nd then 1st then 2nd and then keep going normally. No big clunking, crunching or crashing, just quick changing. I checked the levels and all was normal, just figured it might be on it's way out so I avoided letting 1st max out. Then the other day when entering traffic I got a little carried away and too close to maxing out 1st and it done it's little dance and then just about stopped, again no big noises. It was still driving but there was the feeling of the brakes being applied firmly, not hard, and then being released then reapplied. This went on for a couple of hundred meters until I got to a safe spot to stop. By this stage smoke was coming from the back as well . Thinking it was blown and going to cost big $$$, I decided to carefully nurse it back home as I was only 2k's away. On the way I had to change the gears manually to keep it from jumping around, (kind of felt like it was going from H to L and back). By the time I was a 3rd of the way home, it seemed to start behaving normally again, but I was still manually changing the gears to be safe. Got home and the underside was covered in oil with a red tinge to it, I guessed it was most certainly transmission fluid. I then left it alone until today. I went under to see if I could spot any obvious cracks or damage to the transmission, nothing. The I checked the fluid level out of curiosity and it shows full. What has happened to the auto??? Did it just have a fit and is now ok, if so where did the oil come from to cover the underside, and how can it still be full? Any help on this would be appreciated, Thanks.

How did you check the oil? Has to be engine running and in neutral from memory.
If you checked it with the engine off it usually shows over full as most of it has drained back to the sump.

Hi, It was running and in neutral. I checked it at least 4 times to make sure my eyes weren't playing tricks on me.

Check the cooler lines for pin holes /splits or rubbing, i went thru the same a few months ago and it took me 10ltrs of ATF to find the problem and about an hour to fix.
