    Overheating

Just been up to the 4x4 show and on the way there my disco started to overheat.

It has had all the head work done about 3000km's ago and there isnt any leaks coming from there. I put the heaters on as soon as i noticed it overheating hoping to cool it down a little but didnt get any really hot air coming through. Radiator doesnt seem to be damaged and cant find any leaks from the coolant ressy.

I'm thinking maybe the thermo stat is buggered. Going to change that out hopefully tonight.

    Any thoughts?

Was going to head up to Lancelin tomorrow for a bit fishing over night. Hoping this fixes it.

Its a 1997 v8 if thats any help to folk

I've just had a look on the search function and seen that it could be this or maybe the thermo coupling. Think i'll give the thermostat a go first seeing as i have one already

Did it slowly increase or was it very sudden?

    Have you lost any coolant?

Its a slow increase in temp. Luckily i noticed an pulled over before it go to out of control. Just waiting on the thermo coupling getting delivered to me.

Try topping up the coolant through the water pipe that sticks up behind the rocker cover with the plug on top. Fill to the top and let idle for a while, until air bubbles stop, you may have an air lock (make sure heater is ON), or you are maybe losing compression gasses into the water system, i.e. blown head gasket/s, Regards Frank.

Thats another problem i have. It doesnt seem that the heater is working on hot. I changed the thermostat thinking it would be that but it didnt help at all. Tried running it without one as well but its the same problem. As soon as i go up a hill or drive for about a hour or so the temp gradually climbs. Im hoping its not the head cos its only done about 3000km's since it was last done

The heater will not work if there is an air lock, you may need to bleed the system in the way I described in previous post, Regards frank.

    Hi
I have the 96 v8 and also had a similar problem
Slow over heating (though heater worked) turned out that the twin thermos had blown

Unless you have replaced the viscous fan with twin thermos, the thermos on the front of the aircon condenser should only come on if the engine temp exceeds AFAIR 103C or the aircon is on.

The car should run at about 91 0r 92C.

So the root problem is more likely to be that you have a blocked radiator, or if the probem is at low speed only, a dead viscous fan.

I've got the radiator out of it now so going to try find somewhere to re core it. It feels really bottom heavy so Im thinking that the radiator is going to be full of crap. Tried flushing it through but not a lot came out. Also got the viscous fan arrived now so going to fit that at the same time. Whats the best way to lock it all up so I can remove the coupling?

I had the same problem with my tdi. Chasing it for nearly 2 years (car isn't daily driver) did everything u could think of
Had my radiator done twice by specialists both saying it was just dirty
Finally bit the bullet and replaced it with an aluminium cored one a month ago, all my overheating problems solved. Only $350 from LRA. Worth doing on a 15-20 year old vehicle in my opinion.
