Could try wreckers. I didn't actually realise the plastic bit was separate from the rest of the dash.
Hi,
how are you guys?
I was wondering whether any of you know if you can buy the centre part at the front of the dash (the black plastic one where the stereo and all the heater knobs are) complete, to replace my existing one which is all cracked around the stereo.
an after market stereo unit was installed and they screwed it into the brittle plastic and everything is cracked and bits missing so you pretty much cant keep the stereo in there as the whole casing keeps sliding out.
I was thinking of manufacturing some kind of wooden or fibreglass or even polysterine bit to wedge in there and cover up all the cracks and hold the stereo in place. but then i wondered might be easier if you can just buy that front section might be easier and look more original.
any ideas?
i'll post some pics later when i get home.
thanks,

A second hand one would probably be just as brittle. I glue a some plastic behind mine with hot glue to re enforce it. I did not put the screws back in under the radio so did not put pressure on this spot. Not sure if you can buy this part new or not. Have a go at gluing it back together.
Cheers, David.

Hi Guys,
did a bit of research and it actually is a separate part. you can actually buy it online brand new. found a few websites seling it just for anyone interested. it is a bit pricey for a piece of plastic.
Britcar (UK) Ltd > AWR1383PUY CONSOLE ASSY FACIA BLACK DISCO1 (G)
or
AWR1383PUY CENTRE CONSOLE ASSY BLACK | Discovery 1 1989-1998: Interior | shop | www.lrseries.com | L. R. Series
the part number is shown on both websites too.
thinking of buying the whole thing seeing as mine is cracked to bits and well beyond repairs. building my own custom bit would probably cost me about the same as well.
is there a better way to make this info more accesible to people? should i post it as a new thread or is there a database for this kind of stuff?
thanks.
I have the same problem.was told $160 for a new one $80 for a second hand one.
I think its wiser to get a new one.......no telling how brittle a second hand one is.
Might pay to check out Rovers North for a price as they may be cheaper but not sure. I would also go with a new one as the others are correct in not knowing how brittle another of the same age would be.
I've actually found that on the D1 workshop manual (RAVE) Chapter 76 Chassis and Body - Page 46, they have instructions on how to remove and fit this part for anyone needing this information.
The section is called Dash Panel Central Louvre Panel.
I assume there is some copyright issues so i will not post the page here but if you have the RAVE manual you can find it by looking up what i mentioned above.

bought it new from the UK. cost a bit but the interior looks heaps better and nothing rattles anymore.
got rid of the old heavy stereo as well and put in a light blutooth one. you can get finisher around the stereo face to make it look a bit better but its $50. i might just invent something.
i attached some pics and also a pic of the centre console installed is here. I bought a new heat facia too as the old one was pretty weared

I had to manufacture a blanking plate out of tin to keep my new stereo in as mine was craked. You only need a retangle cut out just big enough to fit in the space and go around the stereo to stop it falling out! Only a couple of bucks, but a pain in the a.... to get it correct. Looks fine now though, and new Sony system sounds so much better, even with stock speakers!!![]()
