Restart after layover - thickened oil
Yesterday I went to try and get the old D1 V8 running again after it had sat for 6 months (had a leaky injector o-ring).
I've now replaced the old Lucas injectors with a refurbed Bosch Gen III set (cost less than $90 - good old eBay!), along with new o-rings etc.
However, on doing the final checks before giving it a go, I note that the oil on the dipstick is really thick. It was given an oil change in January, using Castrol GTX, and has covered only 2000km since. It was rebuilt only 15000km ago.
3 Questions:
- Is there any known issue with using Castrol GTX in the V8?
- Would the fuel leaking into the sump (had leaked around the inlet manfold gasket) cause the oil thickening?
- Is there any good flushing type additive that I can use to make sure there's no sludge anywhere? Not looking for snake oil (no pun intended) just a tried and trusted product, if it exists.

Have you drained the oil to see how lumpy it actually is? If at all in doubt, remove sump, clean out, refit with sealant. Nothing beats a 100% wash out of the sump.
Failing that I'm told running diesel in your sump for a short while will help flush the oil system.
Personally I'd remove the sump if the oil didn't drain cleanly.
As for Castrol, never used it, I've always used Penrite, seems to last a few years in a stored vehicle no worries.

Not drained it yet - I just assessed it with a drip test (or lack of) from the dipstick.
I'll drain a little out, see what it looks like, and then top it up with some fresh oil and some diesel if the oil looks like it will flow.

Well I managed to drain a couple of litres out (with a cold engine it was not flowing well at all), replaced with some new cheapo stuff along with a bottle of engine flush that I found in Supercheap when I went to get some new (decent) oil.
Started up and ran for the 10 mins dictated on the label, which was unexciting given the idling problem that I had introduced somehow.
Drained it all, and now looks clean again.
Now I've got it running properly again, I can finally feel the difference the Bosch Gen III injectors make.
