can someone please confirm for me what i already know
300tdi disco blew the top rad hose a few days ago in the middle of the pilbara.
got it flat bedded back to mine ( i live in the pilbara ) put it back together again and now the system gets air locked and when up to temp forces coolant out of the resevior bottle. whole system seems over pressurised. head gasket right.
also was told by a mechanic my transfer case leaks because the rear yoke is warn, so a new rear output seal wont fix it. explanation and clarification on the yoke part please???
thanks

Common issue if the rear output FLANGE, not yoke, seal surface is worn badly. The seal comes in the replacement output flange kit, along with a locknut and felt washer.

As for the head issues, then I'm afraid you may well be right

Hi Ade,
Sorry my friend, the head gasket I suspect is no longer of this world. Just out of interest how many klms have you done? I'll bet it is number three, a quick compresion test will confirm.
As for the other issue, I found the plug between the transfer case and the gearbox was a tad worn, hope what Justincoper talks about is the issue, the other one is a nightmare, as I found out...........
Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year, I know you have car issues, still have a good time it will all seem better after Santa has been. Maybe ask him for a new head gasket, and possibly a head.
If you are after a head and all the bits reasonably price and quick delivery try Turner Engineering in the UK. They're good.

look through my earlier posts, I put a turners performance head on about three months or more ago. this time my top rad hose went and I didnt catch it in time despite switching off as soon as I smelt coolant.

HI Ade,
Sorry didn't read through your earlier post. What type of gasket did you use? If you put that in earlier post again sorry. When I got my 300 Tdi it had one of the metal shim gaskets in it, I replaced it with the Elring gasket, in addition to that when I had fitted the head prior to putting coolant in I ran the engine for five minutes (ish), belts disconnected etc just to get some heat into the block and assist the surface adhesive / sealant of the gasket to go off. Left the engine to cool down and then finished the rebuild, to date no issues. Same gear, Turner performance head etc. I had the engine out for a rebuild so I had the block "decked" as well. I ended up using a four hole gasket which is about a big as they go.
I did spend an inordinate amount of time getting the angle torquing right, not sure if you used new bolts, I did on this occasion seeing they were so easy to get.
Good luck with the head gasket job.

I used new head bolts and whatever gaskets turners sent me, I have ordered new head bolts again and new gasket set, will get to it early new year, straight edge the head also to see if it need machining once I get it off.

Hi Ade,
Just a suggestion, if you get some engineers bearing blue and put this on one of the faces, more than likely the block, if you move the head around a bit this will give you an indication of any high spots on the head. Straight edge, yeap great, the engineers blue is just another option.

Air in cooling system
Hi Ade
With the air in your cooling system sounds like you need to fill and bleed again. Biggest problem with discos is header tank is so low. level gets below pump level, pump pumps air, blows head gasket, hose or header tank. Have heater turned on and circulating while running during and after fill.
Check this site for some possible fixes.

Hi Ackie,
One of the advantages of having a 50 mm body lift is that this is not the case any more for me, bit of an extreme fix to the problem but it works.............

Commiserationas Ade, gets a bit warm this time of year in the Pilbara which probably doesn't help.
May not be the end of the world (read cyl head). Did the rad hose blow because of a/. blown head gasket, b/. old hose, c/. faulty thermostat, d/. loose clamp, e/. crook rad cap or some other reason ?
Might not be a total loss, I'd expect better metal in a new head so even if it's bent it may be machinable
.
Don't know much about these Elring gaskets that I've seen mentioned here, what's the difference ?, used to use copious quantities of Hylomar in the old days is this still done ?
It is Christmas and with a bit of luck you may get away with a new (better quality) head gasket
, though I would change the thermostat and rad cap out of spite anyway.
Regarding head bolts, if they're not overstretched why toss them away ? , I'm pretty sure the LR manual says they're good for 5 uses.
I'm waiting for my head and bits from Turners. They seem very efficient, ordered it on Boxing Day and it's been shipped already.
Good luck.
Deano
