    Question Help please!

My recently purchased 1996 Land Rover Discovery TDi manual, is handling strangely!
At highway speeds it has developed a rocking back & forth motion, causing me to bounce in my seat.
When it goes over bumps, it jumps sideways.
It has only just started doing this, and doesn't feel safe.
Any ideas of where to start looking for problem much appreciated.

Not sure, but check that your centre diff is not in the locked position - The front lever should be back and to the right. Check that the shock absorber bushings are intact, highway speeds might cause the affected wheel(s) to bounce.

Thanks for your advice . . . the diff lock lever is where it should be, however, I noticed a couple of weeks ago that the symbol on dash lights up occasionally, and at random while driving. I think when changing down from 5th to 4th, otherwise no pattern, and just briefly flashes; doesn't stay on.
Will check the shock absorber bushings.

PS Do you mean shock absorber bushes? Not familiar with bushings.

A tyre tread may be de-laminating at speed, causig it to loose its shape.

Check "panhard" rod bushings (they locate the front axle laterally to the chassis)

Check rear "A" frame ball joint is still in place and secure, located on top/centre of rear diff housing.

Check for any missing or damaged radius arm bushings.

As previously mentioned check all 4 shock absorbers are connected to Chassis and axles at mounting points.

My answer to these questions is: there will be multiple problems, all adding together to create the unstable driving.

    Some suggestions in here:

I agree with the others though - check the shockers (dampers) are secure and obvious rubber bushes that look worn out.

    Sounds like dud shocks.

A mate drove his the other day, and it was like trying to drive a trampoline.

Love it! I was describing my experience to a friend earlier, as like driving a hovercraft!!
So, Shockers are certainly looking like a prime candidate at this stage, but will certainly be checking all the other front end things as suggested by all here, and the A frame ball joint.

If I get my magnifying glass out I can just read what your writing

Seriously- setting your font size to 1 doesn't help people trying to read your posts. Try selecting font size 2 or maybe change your defaults so it uses font size 2 by default.
