You will need to weld a washer to the inside of the bush then use a slide hammer to remove it.
Had a noise and vibration that steadily got worse in a 300TDI auto 200k. It also made the car run quite roughly. I was thinking all sorts of expensive transmission problems but it was the rubber coupling between the rear propellor shaft and diff. It was totally shagged. But not expensive ($98.00) for a german one and easy to replace. Well nearly easy. Does anyone know how to remove the central bush which is pushed into the end of the prop shaft? I couldn't see how to get it out easily and we need the car tomorrow. Still, with the car up I got to see that the rear shocker bushes also need replacing. And while I was investigating reasons for the vibrations and lack of power, I discovered that the intercooler hoses could probably do with renewal. So it's probably been a good experience.

I got a set of silicon intercooler hose's from the UK for around $100 delivered. Better than the rubber ones.

Can use a slide hammer behind the bush if you're lucky. Other option is to run a weld bead around the inside of the bush. this will shrink the bush allowing it to come out easier.

I replaced mine with a kit so you don't have the worry of the donut splitting.I used a grinder to cut the thing out .Bit of a job ,but once done no more worries.Put a new drive shaft in or get a second hand one from the wreckers. Its just like a defender one now.Mine's a 97 tdi auto.

I'm sure there's been threads on this before - but I did mine last week and it was surprisingly easy (maybe I was lucky). I put a large socket (3/4 drive) over the outside of the offfending object and then used a heavy washer and a bolt screwed into the M8 hole in the end of the nose to draw it off by tightening up the bolt - put some peetrating oil around the edge of the pressed fit first.
Best of luck
Ian
Thanks for the ideas. At least I know its simple with the right approach and impossible without.
Also thanks about the intercooler hoses. Im not too worried about rubber ones. They have lasted 200k. Unless the silicone ones come in a range of colours......
Btw if anyone is interested, I have been running the car on a mixture of filtered waste vegie oil and diesel for a while now and should start seeing if there are any longer term effects.
Cheers

Noticed a vibration on the highway over 80kph so might have to check mine as well.
