A - yes it is
B - yes, the 6spd defender still uses an LT230 transfer
C- i believe Ashcroft have done a 6spd to TDI conversion but not sure if they produce a fitting kit.
Hi all, a friend of mine has a TDI D1 5 sp manuel and needs the gearbox to be removed for repairs. My question is in three parts. A. Is the new defender 6sp manual? B. Can it be fitted to a D1 TDI with existing T/F case? C. trasplant whole GB & T/F case in TDI D1.. Any info on yhis would be greatly appreciated. Eddie.![]()

Q is where are you going to get an affordable 6 spd box, and what advantage would it confer on the relatively sluggish 300Tdi (compared to Puma 2.4 and esp 2.2 engines) ?
Also are there electronic connections to the Puma gearbox?
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

if it's another gear ratio he wants, then wouldn't a roamerdrive be an easier option? Unless you picked up the 6 speed for a song.
Its a transit gearbox so shouldnt be too hard to find, if the ratio's are good it will give the TDi more legs for the highway.

if this thread (link) has the correct ratios listed then 6th gear is 0.79:1
Fifth in my LT77 is 0.77 (same as the R380), so the Ford 6 speed isn't going to make any difference to cruising speed at all, if anything you'll go through more clutches making unnecessary gear changes. Though it may be a case of starting off in second (2.84) and not really using 1st. are they stronger that a 380?
Would be interesting for it's own sake whether a 6 speed would bolt in to a 110, they have stopped making the 380 from what I've read.
Supposed to be a lot stronger than the R380, one version of the MT82 is used in the hot versions of the Mustang in the US (and has been giving grief, but that version is assembled in China)
It should be a similar version used in the new Ranger and new BT50 here too.
I asked Dave Ashcroft about it in one thread, I'll see if I can find it.
Found it, Serg asked the Q;
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/1541347-post87.htmlHi Serg,
no oil pump, no shims, no filter in the MT82,
internals look strong and simple, 82mm centres, no taper roller bearings, just large cylindrical roller bearings, gears are big and have fine teeth and look ground like the LT230 Q gears, selector forks are steel fabricated with plastic feet, these feet look like a weak point, would like to fit bronze feet,
the quaife kit is 300M not Maraging,
the 6 speed into the TD5 is coming on,
had to remove the rear housing and fit and make a shorter one :

A Roamerdrive on a Defender lt230 does give you a 6th gear which is a full ratio above 5th, however it does not split 4th and 5th so does not make the addition more flexible as 4th+overdrive is essentially the same as 5th regular.
On the older series and rangie LT95 boxes the overdrives split 3rd and 4th and in fact split most gears so you ended up with an 8 speed instead of 4.
You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
The roamerdrive does give a pretty impressive ovedrive (28% is advertised) but would it be too tall for tdi engines to pull? I'm interested to know what the OP found out, whether it is viable, adapters etc. It would open up another whole source of gearboxes.
Interesting response from Dave Ashcroft re the 6 speed, are they good things he is pointing out or bad? I would have thought the pump and filter would have been something good to have, or is that just needless complexity?
