Disco 1 problems, where do I start.

    Hi all,
I have a 98 Disco 1 V8 which has had an extensive engine rebuild 2 years ago. She's been going like a trooper until the last 4 months.
Started using 2 litres of coolant a week 4 months ago, now currently using 4 litres per day.
Can't find any leaks, starting to run on 7 first start of a morning but comes good pretty quick, no water in oil but oddly heater has stopped working as well. Not sure if this is related to the loss of coolant, no evidence of coolant inside cabin. Doesn't run hot even when towing. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Also my speedo has stopped working today, I've been told they are electronic. If so, do they have a fuse or circuit breaker somewhere?
    Thanks in advance.
    Roddles.

have you checked under the hood when the car has had a run? i.e the coolant system is under pressure...sometimes leaks can occur but are only evident under pressure and sometimes not evident at all if its leaking/spraying/misting on to an area which is hot causing it to evaporate quickly.

have you checked for staining around the engine bay?
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

4L per day - how many KM per day are you doing and what sort of driving?

That's a HUGE consumption rate but knowing the distance per day would help. If it's not changed the way it runs, I'd be looking for a conspicuous leak - hoses to and from the heater matrix (up on firewall), to and from radiator, to and from the coolant tank. Does it park it's ground when running or parked when hot? As Dullbird suggested, check engine bay for signs of leaks. If it contains glycol it should be very easy to see where it's been spraying.

The heater relies upon warm coolant, so if you're out of, or low on coolant you won't have any heat to exchange. There's also a chance the heater matrix has split.

When you say " no water in oil" is that definite ? I hate to say it but I'm thinking head gasket.

Checked under hood and under dash,no evidence of coolant loss anywhere, had it pressure tested, can't find any leaks, replaced a suspect heater hose that wasn't leaking just to be sure but no luck. It only travels 250 k per week. I'm baffled as it has not lost power and does not get hot. Wish my speedo worked as well. Lol. Thanks for the input, I'll keep digging, I'm bound to find something

It has coolant in a combustion chamber. Blown head gasket or slipped liner.

I think you'll get your answer then by pulling your spark plugs. Any rusty plugs will be those belonging to cylinders that receive pressurised coolant when parked at the end of a drive.

My V8 was rusting plugs at 195,000km and it was only after chopping out the threads in the head (due to rust) that I ended up rebuilding it at 307,000km. It wasn't using anywhere near that much coolant though - mine was losing perhaps 300ml a fortnight.
