    Which repowering option

    Hey guys,
The old mans D1 is having some heart murmurs. It's a 3.9 V8 with about 220 000 on the clock. It's having it's fair share of problems (down on power, oil consumption, running on less than 8, running rich, etc)

Basically - getting sick of throwing cash at it.

So we were thinking about our options. As we see it, they are as follows:
    Rebuild/replace 3.9
    Drop in 4.6
    Convert to LS1
Convert to diesel - either 300tdi or 2.8

Could we please have your thoughts on price, ease of execution, benefits, drawbacks etc?

Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

If you're sick of throwing money at it, then the 3.9 makes the most sense.

Your D1 is worth less than $5K - any reasonable option will cost close to that or more and the D1 will be worth no more than $6k.

Do enough to get it running OK and sell it and buy something better. $10K will get a nice D2.

    First Gary,
It's sort of sentimental. And, as is commonly the case, worth a lot more than that to us due to additions/modifications

    Slunnie + second Gary,
I think it's more reluctance to spend money and end up with nothing different.

What about a TDV6 conversion? It would at least give you modern reliability and performance. Not cheap though, would estimate around 8 or 9k to do.

Your car is very old in the eyes of the trade. It has a wholesale value of around $2000 if it has some rego, good tyres, and a Safety Certificate. If it doesn't have these it is a wrecker. What will your engine conversion cost? Even reco'ing your existing engine is going to cost at least $3000 to do it completely and properly. Why not put the dollars into a newer one and trade the old one.
