    Rangie and Disco Auto boxes

A mate of mine has given me a 1997 Discovery 3.9Efi Automatic with a dodgy gearbox. It has reverse gears only... but the rest of the car is pretty good actually.
Rather than muck about with trying to repair it I found a Range Rover Classic Automatic box laying on the ground at the breakers. I'm told it's in good working order.
The Discovery engine is a single serpentine belt and the Range Engine is a multi-belt...I have no idea what year that Rangie was before they removed the power-plant.

Question is...do we think the Rangie Auto and Discovery Auto will be the same box?

If it is a ZF box it should be ok. Even the A727 box should be ok. I suspect the classic range to have the A727 box. The transfer case may also be different a Borg Warner instead of the LT230.

Someone with some practical experience should be along to answer your question with a bit more conviction.

Its the same ZF box in both, the TF727 was only used 83-85 so long as the rangie was EFI it will be a ZF.

    Any RRC from about 85 onwards has a ZF 4 speed. The 3.5 had a ZF2HP22 and from 89 onwards 3.9 had a 4HP22 exactly the same as a D1 3.9.
A4 HP22 will fit no problems as the BW trans needed a jackshaft anyway so will fit a LT230.
