Noisy Disco
Hi all. I've just been advised to pose the questions I have from the introduction thread I started to here, so here goes....
We own a 1996 Auto Disco 300Tdi which we've had for about 4 years now. Most of the time she's been fine, but around 2 1/2 years ago the engine check light started coming on and she started throwing loads of smoke out (we are talking fog bank here!!). After many months of on-and-off work and a lot of cash, I ripped out the EDC injector pump, computer and MAF unit, fitted a manual injector pump and cable throttle.
After that she ran clean as a whistle, started easier than she ever did before, and almost zero smoking even when starting.
I now have another issue which is grinding me down! About 4 months ago I noticed the oil light would come on below around 1100rpm or so, I used the truck very little until I managed to do an oil and filter change which seemed to make the problem go away. The trouble is now that around 2 months after that I noticed an occasional 'knocking' type noise which seems worse when I rev the engine over 3000rpm then drop the throttle. it's almost as if something is clattering on the overrun. Gradually the noise seems to be getting more constant. I have tried to identify where the problem may be but I am starting to suspect that the Big Ends may have taken a bash when the oil pressure light showed low pressure?
At the minute I cannot check it for any length of time because the starter motor has decided to spin itself and not the damn engine!! I am guessing it is probably a sticking solenoid and not damage to the ring gear as when I turn the engine by hand and try again it is the same?
So, once I get the starter motor of and checked and get her running again (I hope) I can do more investigation.
Anyway, sorry for the long story, but it gives a better background on the truck.
Thanks for reading and any info/advice is gratefully received
JB

My money is on the big-ends. I had similar noises at higher revs, and it was the hard facing worn off them from oil starvation.
