I had Redline oil in my old GQ's front diff, couldn't hear even the smallest whisper come from there, they recommended 100 000k's between changes for axles. Just have to get used to red/pink oil LOL

Tank i am sure you are right, probably half the klms are driving on the beach
which can be fairly hard on the engine.
Every Boxing Day Super Cheap auto have big sales on oil, bought the Magnatec for $20.00 for 5 litres so not a big spend. I have never heard of premature engine wear due to changing the oil to often.
Does anybody use the Lucas or Morey oil additives?
I have used them in my GQ, Ford Explorers (3), Pajero's (2) & now in use in engine, power steering & transfer box in my Disco. :D
Really good for small leaks/weeps allround, & can be used in petrol or diesel oils.
:o (making cross signs, sprinkling holy water, etc, and I'm not religious :p)
I really dislike additives, IMO they have no place in a well functioning car and really have no place in a fully formulated oil.
All they generally contain are high molecular weight oils with a few sparing additives.
All you are doing when adding them to a compartment is diluting the balanced additive package in whatever oil you are already using.
Few actually add anything useful, or at least in a quantity to do anything useful.
There is the odd exception, but IMO the mainstream ones aren't worth the $ you pay.
If you want to use a heavier oil, fill the diff or t/case with a proper fully formulated oil of a higher viscosity range.
Re. additives I agree, not required for everday use in a small diesel. My point was that most of the oils don't really have that much diference between them. Another point my mate made when I asked his opinion on synthetics was that for smaller engines they were excelent but in truck motors they were destroyed well before a mineral oil with an additive. That's data from testing done by his company, a large mining one with lots of trucks. He did say that the additive they use was extremly high quality and he sugested that ones obtainable in retail may not be the best and like he said, not required on small motors.Quote:

Yeah that's diesels but petrol V8's........................ :)
I've been using CAT diesel oil in my disco ever since I brought it (close to 4 years ago) I drop it out every 5000 as it is readily available, along with donaldson filters (oil & fuel stocked especially for my disco) all round. Purchased for a good price from work....local CAT dealer.
