There was some Valvoline 10w 40 in my 300tdi when I got it, but been using Penrite diesel HPR15 ever since. No complaints so far.

Penrite or Castrol GTX diesel, depends what's on special...Second the motion on oil changes, unless you have a fat wallet then go for it and give your used oil to me...
. I try to change my diesel between 5-7 thou, a mate of mine's a heavy diesel mechanic and he reckons that most oils are much of a muchness and the best way to get quality oils are to use additives.

I use Liqui Moly 10W40 which has MoS2 anti-friction agent, I change it every 5000 Km with the oil filter.
Liqui Moly gives a 10,000 Km interval between oil changes, but I prefer to stick to the 5,000Km because we have pretty dusty conditions.
Catrol Magnatec Diesel ever since L/R changed to it. Change it every 10k. No problems ever. Although I don't do much offroading at the moment. 300tdi Disco!
if you can find it, neo oils are fabulous. expensive, but very veyr good. Ive swapped all my vehicles over to it, disco will run it before long too.
I've never, ever met anyone that's used NEO ! (other than moi)
I was sponsored by the then NEO importer a very long time ago and they produced exceptional lubricants way back then.
Their gear oils and greases in particular were probably the best available, most Champ car and F1 teams used at least their CV joint grease and often their RHD gear oil regardless of who sponsored them, but time moves on.
The only NEO stuff I'm currently using is their old Z12 grease in the wheel bearings of the Patrol and Deefer, and when they next need doing it'll be replaced by Redline CV2 grease.
It's just much easier for me to obtain, and I use CAT Desert Gold grease everywhere else.
The 3.9 Disco engine in my Range Rover has Caltex Delo 400 in it. Seems to do the job quite well. I think the engine has done about 250 000km (educated guess).
