    New Disco

Picked up my new '95 Discovery TDi yesterday with 320,000 km's on the clock. Everything feels nice and solid, no rust and a great colour. Been through quite a few of the threads here and checked a majority of the problems stated and it all seems good. Bit of an upgrade from my '74 Series III and i'm loving it, going to be a great truck. The only problem i've found is that when taking off there is a sudden jerk and a clunk as it takes drive and then a bit of vibration whilst driving. I'm thinking that the donut on the rear prop shaft is worn. On the plus side i've got some serious mod's coming up in the next month including:
    - 3' coil lift
    - 5' flexi shocks
    - 50mm flexi flares
    - 33' mud tyres on 15x8 steelies
    - Turbo boost gauge
    - Bar work all around
    - 9000 pound winch
    and lots more
Will post updates and pictures as I go, here's a picture of it when I got her home.

Don't want to alarm you, yes well I do, any clunks/Vibrations from front or rear driveline can turn into an expesive disaster if the problem is not sorted.
Get under before you drive it any further and check, especially the front tailshaft uni-joints for wear and wobble, check the rear doughnut as well. A broken front uni-joint, esp. on the T/C end can cause chaos if if lets go while driving, including chopping the G/Box and T/C to bits (very exxy).
So unload the front axle and put the T/C in neutral, CHOCK the opposite end wheels both F&R and give the unis a workout with a pry bar/large screwdriver, any wear replace uni-joints pronto, repeat for the rear axle, good luck, Regards Frank.

Agree - love that colour !

I think a 3' coil lift is excessive.... 3" might be OK though....
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Cheers Tank, I jumped under there this morning and the donut is shot so i'll replace that one asap. The fronts appear ok but i'll change them anyway just to be on the safe side. Hmmm, a 3 foot lift may be a bit excessive... might go for a 3 inch instead

3' lift would make it easy to check the tail shafts, though, regards Frank.

Checked both prop shafts and all is well, it was the rear donut. I replaced it and now the wobbles and clunks have gone There is still a slight clunk in reverse but I think that may be the handbrake, will investigate on Thursday when I get a day off. Checked all oils and everything is sweet. Performs great on the road with plenty of grunt and stability. All in all i'm super happy with the purchase Especially going from a Series III. Will get more pictures soon as i've got some minor mods to do over the next week or so.

Might be the brake. I think you'll find that clunk is the bearing in the rear of the TC, I've been told by more than one landy mechanic and long term landy owners . Am told it's not a problem will last like that as long as the transfer. It's a design fault replacing it will fix, not sure if it will recur though.

Now the donut is replaced and it's a million times better it's not really phasing me, everything feels good and i've checked that everything is tight. If it gets worse then i'll probably replace but for now i'll how it goes. The previous owner did say that sometimes the handbrake gets stuck and won't disengage unless you reverse back a few meters, I haven't experienced it yet but if it does happen i'll take it apart and see what the verdict is

If the parking breake is dragging, back off the handbrake adjuster on the drum, a lot of people do that up to shorten the brake lever travel inside the cab, ends up with the brake shoes dragging. There is an adjuster under the lever itself which will adjust the cable and not the brake.
