    Strange Electrical problem

    Hi all,
I have a 93 Discovery 3.5lt with 266k on it and it has a weird problem, when I start from cold the Alt light stays on and tacho does not work, battery also does not charge, about 15 mins after driving tacho starts to work and battery starts to charge, this only happens from cold cold start and has only just started doing It, previously it was fine, also my dual battery monitor does not kick in till alt starts chargin (which i understand) I have dc volt meters conected to each battery, thats how I know the alt isnt charging, its fine other than from a cold start

    Any ideas?

    Kevin

The brushes are probably worn out and barely touching the slip rings. It is quite easy to adapt a Bosch alternator to these, I've done it a few times myself. The Bosch alternator off an old Magna is a similar fit. You will need a W winding connection for your tacho. Some alternators already have this terminal, some you just open them up and solder a lead to a diode junction point and run the tacho off that. Any auto electrician should be able to supply a new or reco alternator to suit. The tensioner bar may need to be modified.

Hey, thanks for that, so the brushes being worn would possibly cause It not to work intermittently? I.E when it get hot they expand and make contact?

It already has a non genuine alt on it the previous owner did this so the bracket has been modded, ill get the number of that one and get the same, you mentioned the w winding conector what does it look like, my tacho has never worked properly so I suspect that is missing

How about you tell us what brand of alternator is on there? If its a Bosch you just undo two screws and replace the regulator from outside. As for a W terminal, google will find you answers to every question

How to add a "W" terminal to your alternator

If your tacho works at all it is connected to a W terminal. You could have loose connections, wrong size pulley, loose fan drive belt etc all of which affect the tacho.

Ok, it was touch and go getting home yesterday as the alt was not charging the battery level dropped to around 9v and the car started to lose power but i made it and just as i was pulling in the driveway the alt kicked in again and all was well, i put the battery on charge overnight so it was full for this morning, funny enough the problem never occurred this morning when i started the car at o dark hundred i had a look at the alternator last night and got the brand and Model number, it is a motorcraft and the part number starts with 82D which indicates it is a ford part However i cannot find any info on the net at all, i have had a good search to, i took a few pictures (attached) and the regulator is an INGRAM 831255, which i also searched for but came up Zip, i managed to find out that the Company ingram is now Ashdown Ingram located at Wetherill Park in Sydneys west, i will Give them a Call today to see if i can get a Regulator from them, Searching there Catalogue i have come up with 3 complete Alternators that suit LR D1 and possibly more models, have a look here,

    Ashdown Ingram Catalogue

    The LXA822 - 120amp, LXA119 - 65amp and the LXA121 80amp, i will enquire about these also

    thanks for your help

PS, i hope the photos attached, it a wierd way of doing it

That is a stock-as-a-rock Bosch alternator, rebadged as a Ford part, probably off an XE-XF Falcon or similar. The replacement regulator is Bosch part no. 9 190 067 005-775 or similar (I have a new one in my hand), fits heaps of 80's aussie produced cars, eg VB-on Commodore, Magna, Falcon, Bluebird etc. These things are childs play to fix. 2 screws and the regulator is out in your hand.
