? Lost drive to front wheels?

    I have a 93 D1, V8 manual as a paddock basher.
On the weekend was having a hoon around when i decided to try a handbrake turn around a sharp bend, pushed in clutch, shifted down, pulled on the hand brake, slid around the corner nicely, released handbrake, let clutch out foot on the loud peddle, all was going well then it went pearshaped. Felt as if I lost all steering control and no drive to the front as I spun another 90degrees. Reversed out of that situation and continued on around a couple of small s bends, on some damp grass when the rear end decided step out and try and meet the frontend again. Again seemed as if lost all traction / steering at the front. Felt as if I was in a rear wheel drive.
Decided to take it easy back to the house. Both drive shafts seem okay, and no free play in either.
Will have to take it for another spin to see how it handles / drives.

First thing, it's not a real hand brake turn on a D1 as the hand brake drum is on the drive shaft out of the transfer case. This is locking drive to all wheels.

Did you have the CDL engaged. If so release it and see if you have drive now. If not you have done a diff or axles most likely.
    Cheers, David.

I had a very similar prob not that long ago, I would lose drive sometimes (most) but when in CDL it seemed ok, it was a broken axle front drivers side. Hope this helps

No did not have the CDL engaged.
What is the easiest way to check if you have a broken axle without pulling it all apart?

Engage CDL, handbrake on, select first, release clutch if there is no drive hop out and look under the car, one prop shaft will be spinning. This will tell you which diff has a broken axle ie the one connected to the spinning prop shaft. Than you need to to think about what you start pulling apart.

disengaging CDL is the way to check if you have a broken axle/diff might be an idea to have a second person to put their foot on the brake before you slide under to see if a drive shalf is spinning

    Yeh I cant read either

No it isn't. It works on the rear propshaft. It will only lock the front propshaft is the CDL is locked.

Gave that a try last night, no free spinning driveshafts, wanted to drive off. Went for a test drive and seemed to have drive to the front.
When I lost the traction there were no bangs / pops/ or other unusual sounds so doubt I broke anything. Must have had more to do with the circumstance of where I was and the track conditions at the time. Will have another look / play this weekend and see what happens.
