    Rural mum needs advice!

    I need advise!
I live remotely and rely on my 4WD to get home in winter. I bought a 1996 Discovery in August and after hitting a roo 2 months later, I noticed oil and coolant leaks. After full assessment by Landrover Specialist in ACT, there report stated,
    • leaking coolant from Water Pump,
    • Speedo Fluctuates recommend replacing instrument cluster
    • Numerous oil leaks from engine and gearbox, Engine oil blowing out the dipstick tube, and recommend Engine requires overhaul. Quoted $8000.
    Im unsure what to do???
The rest of the vehicle is in great condition!

    welcome
second opinions are always a good idea when large amounts of money are involved

    1) common in all cars, get it done
    2) have you noticed this yourself? does it bother you? if not, maybe ignore it
    3) can get a new engine and a half for 8k. seems overpriced but engine requires overhaul doesnt tell much either.

If you're handy with the spanners buy the RAVE Cd from the shop (in the header row)

pretty much everything on the disco 1's is userfixable but the oil out the dipstick thing i typically a gone set of rings and that means engine strip and rebuild.

    Hi

All of the above could be correct,

But If it was mine I would be removing the cyclone breather and

1: Clean it out with degreaser / kero / whatever you have lying around thehouse

2: Just buy a new one [not that expensive on flee bay approx $ 50 ] you willneed a new "O" ring as well

My way of thinking is if the breather is blocked that will cause excesscrankcase pressure and the dipstick is the best exit for all the pressure toescape

    leaking coolant from Water Pump

If asBlknight.aus said you're handy with the spanners buy theRAVE Cd

    New pump approx $ 90 to $150

"P" gasket and three [3] new bolts it's not a hard job to do

    Speedo Fluctuates

Leave it alone and fit a cheap GPS again off fleebay, far more accurate anyway.

    Hi Laura,

There's been mention of the RAVE CD which you probably don't realise but it's a very very handy workshop manual describing many procedures in detail.

Also to assist with your obtaining a second opinion I've attached a National listing of Land Rover experienced repairers - a handy doc to have in the glovebox when travelling. A friend recently had cause to use and now recommends Canberra Motor Works at Mitchell.

You assumed a diesel. The poster hasn't said if the engine is diesel or petrol.

Absolutely and from experience wiring the dipstick in place only causes oil to leak from gaskets until the breather is unblocked.

    Hi Laura,
If all else fails, as in the engine needs a rebuild, you might like to try a listing of Land Rover wreckers and see what might be available, then get a mechanic to install for you. That could save you thousands.

Good luck and hope you find an answer to your predicament.

    Cheers

That breather on the top of the rocker cover is responsible for a few misdiagnoses over the years. If blocked it can show excesssive crankcase pressure problems, hence their comment about engine overhaul. I would remove it and test again. I know this for a fact as I was almost caught with that scenario many years back. It is quite rare though as since then I have checked numerous others in the past 10 years and seen only 2 with partial blockages. Luckily the engine in question didn't get the overhaul, as the culprit was discovered in time BUT it could've been a very costly mistake.

As for the other items I would take the advice from the comments above
