just to clarify - is this a diesel? or is it a v8 ?
(the diesel has an alarm switch only - the v8 switch has other purposes as well)
if it is a diesel nothing bad will happen (if you disconnect it with everthing off)
and I don't know if it necessary - but have the key out when you do
(this worked for me on a diesel 98D1 and mine is now permanently disconnected)

Thanks for that. Yes it is a Diesel. 1997 300tdi. The key was out when I disconnected it and so far everything seems to be working as usual. The switch was in a pretty bad way. Cracked and not actually sure it made contact with the bonnet anyway!
Are there any particular tell-tale signs I should be looking for?
