    New Intercooler Hoses

    Hey everyone,

Finally, my new pretty silicon intercooler hoses have arrived! So tonight, as well as doing an oil\filter change, I decided to get stuck in to replacing the old crappy ones.

I knew they needed replacing, I have been getting some louder and louder turbo noises, the hoses were shot for sure. I had checked them earlier and they were all pretty soft and ratty, but what greeted me when I finally got them off was a whole new thing!!!!

The bottom hose closest to the intercooler had a gash in it a bit over an inch long!!! I couldn't believe it. It was huge, good decision getting the new hoses then. Money well spent.

In the end, I decided that I may as well pull the intercooler out and give it a clean. Hey, I'm there anyway, I don't need the car for the night I may as well do a little extra maintenance. So now I have a pretty bare left-hand side of the engine bay and a garage that is starting to smell like carby cleaner as my intercooler sits drying.

I will chuck it all back together again tomorrow and take her for a spin. Something tells me the old girl is going to be pleasantly, quick? No, wrong word for a 300TDI really, ummmmm, responsive that will do it!

    Anyway, until tomorrow...

    Chris

P.S. Here is a pic of that "awesome" hose of mine!

well done for the timely hose change, I had the same split in my top hose (intercooler to intake) mine was hissing at me and the bit of oomf there was, went!

the word you need for 300tdi performance is improved, even dramatically improved doesn't mean its fast or anything, but it helps!

looking forward to hearing how the test drive went.

Wow!! That is really the only word for it! There must have been the beginnings of a whole from the day I got the old girl! She is seriously "quick" now, compared to previously.

There is way more up and go, it responds a bit quicker, my EGT's are down and I can hold higher gears uphill without too much hassle and without the temps going through the roof!!

Can't wait to see the improvement offroad! All in all a great, cheap little fix. I ended up doing a bit of "fiddling" here and there while I had my head stuck under the bonnet, figured I may as well spend a bit of time while I have it.

The intercooler is now all shiny, well shinier at least. Hopefully, overall my fuel consumption should come down a little. Not that it has been all that bad, but any improvement is always nice. I can not stress any more how simple and cheap this repair\upgrade is to do. Easily one of the simpler things I have done on the 300TDI, apart from some access issues with the bottom hose closest to the intercooler.

Does anyone clean out their intercooler on a regular basis? If so, how often would you "usually" do it? I'm thinking somewhere around every 6 months or so. I tend to do what equates to my version of a major service around this time, so I figured it won't hurt to add another item to the list.

    Thanks

    Chris

My hoses are almost there. The elbow off the turbo blows up like a balloon under revs. Would explain why there is bugger all power until about 2000rpm. Have to plant it and then back off once the boost catches up.New hoses should be here any day from the UK.

If you put a Provent in place of the factory cyclone rocker cover breather you will find the IC will stay much cleaner. IME the majority of the oil that has soaked your bottom hose and run through the IC comes from a combination of ring blow by and or stem seals. Especially on older 300s.

Unless you turbo craps itself and dumps oil into the cold side (this is much less likely than engine wear)

Soooo, if you are making oil into the vent line, either clean the IC regularly or put a better filter in place.

Luke68, you won't even know your landy when you get the new hoses on if it is anywhere near as bad as mine was!

roverrescue, good point, was aware that there may be a few things wrong causing all this. In fact, there is quite a number of issues that I need to sort, but money dictates when and what repairs\upgrades get done unfortunately.

    Oh to be rich!!

Even during the process of doing this little job I found a couple more issues that I will need to resolve sooner rather than later. But in the end, I wouldn't have bought a LR if I wasn't willing to fix a few things here and there! Actually, I wouldn't have bought any 4wd if I wasn't willing to get my hands dirty.

I think in the end, if you are going offroad, you should know how to at least do some basic repairs. Otherwise a trip is going to end in tears and probably get really expensive!!

Where can you get a "provent" to fit the 300tdi?

Mate, the cheapest I have seen them for so far is on Ebay really. Anywhere else in Australia seems to want a huge premium for it.

After two days of driving around with new hoses I can say "wow" . Lots more responsive from lower revs, faster to rev thru the gears, seems the torque peak has lowered to about 1600rpm instead of the 2000 I was getting. Now to finally fit the egt & water temp gauges and play with the pump
