strange sound on cold startup
Hi, hoping someone can help, my landrover, for about the last 3 weeks, makes a growling? noise on cold start up that last for about 2-3 seconds. As the noise is so brief it is very difficult to pinpoint with opinions varying to it's source. I have disconnected all the belts but it still makes the noise. I have recently replaced - the head, the alternator, starter motor, battery, the power steering pump, all prior to this noise appearing. I cannot reallydescribe the sound, not sure if it is vacuum related or what, it is there as soon as the engine kicks and if you turn the key off prior to it running the noise is there, does anyone have any ideas?

You might get more help if you describe what Land Rover, what engine, what gearbox you have, regards Frank.

Nasty noise
Nasty noise.
If noise is from the front I would be getting a timing belt upgrade kit, if the noise is coming from the rear of the engine, first check the auto gearbox oil level then the flex plate.
Don't suppose the front pulley is loose on the crankshaft, that may need checking again to see if the bolt is tightened correctly?

Aircon (compressor) bearings? If on the way out they can make a growling type noise at first start-up & get louder & longer over time.
