Hi. Check for rust in the fire wall, the well area under windscreen, floor, safari windows, windscreen, a and b pillars , roof above driver ,.. Gary
Hey all, I have been reading a lot from the forum over the last month, and just joined yesterday!.
I'm picking up a 92 disco 1, 197,000 on the clock. 2.5 lift, 32 inch maxxies and a safari snorkel.
I have heard the gear box can have troubles so I'm sending a pre purchase guy around to check it out as well as a compression test. It's coming with a RWC, so I would imagine that the rest of it is reasonable.
Is there any thing else I should look out for? Ie, is the lift kit appropriate? Are the diffs ok with the bigger tyres? And any thing else?
Any advise would much appreciated, I'm totally new to land rover, and 4x4 for that matter. Had a couple of Hilux's..... Broke them, my fault tho.
Would like to make this one a long term relationship, and you all seem to know a lot and arnt shy to share.
Thanks heaps for reading, and I look forward to talking and driving with you soon.
Cheers.

Diesel or petrol??![]()
If it's a diesel, it'd be good to know the last time the cam belt was changed. If you can't find any evidence of when it got done, best put that on your list of things to do.
They are a great wagon - the 300TDi engine is one of the best (if you are indeed getting a diesel). Hope you get a good run out of it.
Cheers guys, it's a petrol job. I have a guy from state roads going to have a look at it, I will def ask for the extra checks about the rust, thanks Gary!
It's in the shop getting the front wheel bearings done at the moment for the road worthy.
I'm hanging out to take it for a drive and own the beast.
Will let you know how it goes and post some pics, and then probably bother you all about mods! Haha, seems like that's the way it goes....
Thanks again!

I take it that it is a manual by the term "gear box", I didn't know they made V8 manuals. You might want to find out about the 32" tyres & whether it'll need the "camel cut" needed to be done for full articulation. I seem to remember reading that needed on here somewhere when checking on max tyre size's.
I only found rust at the bottom of the centre door pillar on mine, around a drain hole. Bloody low K's for it's age, was it a town car for most of it's life?
Hope it all works out well![]()
Yeah it'll probably need the camel cut with 32" tyres, although it depends how wide they are, you might get away with it if they're pizza cutters!
I've got 245/75R16s (31" I think) and had to do the cut.
Do a search on here, there's more than one thread showing how its done.
With the 2.5" lift it'll be worth checking the state of the brake lines at full suspension flex and also the state of the rear propshaft rubber coupling (if it has one, dunno if early D1s had the rubber or a uni-joint) as they tend to flog out quicker when the suspension is lifted.
The diff ratios should just about cope with the 32" tyres, it won't be rocket off the line tho! Although the V8's cope better than the Tdi and sound better doing it![]()
With 32's will definitely need camel cut if not already done. As for the diffs, if they are still standard ratio then it is going to be seriously tall.
I also have 245/75 16's and I found, even with the diesel it is heaps higher off road. I would personally prefer to be geared a bit shorter for my time of road. With 32's that is going to be even taller, it would drive me nuts! Would sit at pretty low revs on the highway though!
