Destroyed my rangie, Time for a disco. but I have a few questions?

    Hi All,

My range rover unfortunately failed to come round a corner and rolled over. everyones ok but the cars a write off.

For my next truck Im thinking about getting a Disco1, but I have a few questions.

Whats the engine pick 200tdi, 300tdi or V8. Im inclined to go the diesel, is there much difference between the 200 and 300tdi's?

How do the diesels compare to the V8?

Do all disco1's have viscous coupling transfer case?

Is there anything I should be looking out for when buying an early-mid 90s disco??

    Thanks for any advice!

IMO the Tdi300 is the engine to go and it will be very cool if it is fitted in a clean RR Classic body.
I used to have both, a Disco 1998 Tdi300 manual and a 1988 RR 3.5 V8. To me the RR manners in the road and cargo capacity are much nicer than the Disco.

In the Discos - go an update - better interior and a whole range of other upgrades.

200tdi is only pre update and has the older LT77 manual gearbox.

300tdi is in the updates on and has the better R380 manual gearbox (auto available too)

V8s - 3.5s in pre updates, 3.9 belt in the interim update and 3.9 serpentine in the updates. If you like V8s go the V8 if you like diesels go the 300tdi. Pros and cons of both engine types apply to landie engines.

No discos have viscous transfer case - all are LT230 with manual CDL.

Look for rust in the floor and around the alpine windows.

Updates have various options like ABS and airbags - also rear roll bars on the suspension.

    Thanks guys,

YOu dont happen to know what years the rear roll bars, ABS and Airbags came in?

Im going to go with a disco over another rangie, the insureance didnt pay out much and a mid 90's disco or a late 80's rangie are all thats in the price range so this time Im going to go with the newer disco.

Any more advice on things to look out for would be great!

    Thanks again!

From the update models - MY95 sold new from April 94 (build from Dec 93).

ABS/Airbags initially an option and later sometimes standard sometimes option dependent on model and year.

Also remember the Disco also came in a 2 door if that takes your fancy.

Late model years are still no guarantee of having ABS or airbags, there are some plain Jane D1 models right up to 98 that didn't have them (I know as I have one).

However, the model crossover at 94/95 is when most of the improvements took place.

You would just need to check each one I think. My '95 has none of that stuff.

    Nor does my 96.

Make sure you drive a Disco before buying one. ha ha I didn't and being tall the restricted vision through the windscreen annoys the hell out of me but almost everything else about the car is great.

My ideal car would be a classic Rangie with a 300Tdi engine plonked in.
