Do you have a screen with tinted top? Ours did to begin with and I'm nearly 200cm tall. I hated driving at night until I found a screen without tint. Took some doing though.

Although due to these thoughts if you want a bush basher then the 200tdi is really cheap and still a good car and certainly get value for money. Maybe a bit noisier and slower than the 300tdi but still fun.

I got one for $1900 with bull bar, snorkle, twin batteires , twin fuel tanks UHF and other toys.
And is good nick too went straight through a roadworthy.

Fair enough, I've just noticed 300TDI's have started to hit the "really cheap" price bracket recently, but I guess it depends on your definition of cheap still.

Yeah your right it all depends if it is your main car or toy. Mine is a toy.

But the disco's are get into that zone where they are starting to be worth a lot more in bits than they are in one piece.

    Mate, I have a Disco 1 V8i and a Disco 2a TD5. Chalk and cheese.

My Diso 1 is my play car, the 2a is my long distance tourer and off roader.

The D1 is a great car, enough power, plenty of comfort and very capable. It has a 2in lift, bar, snorkel and a few other things. It towed an offroad camper to the Cape via the Tele track last year and did it very easily.

The 2 main downsides of the V8i are. Not very good fuel economy (although not any worse than a Landcruiser petrol) and they don't like water. (The distributor is right at the top front of the engine). If you can make the dissy waterproof (can be done) and the economy isnt a problem then I would highly recomend the V8i. Very capable, very comfortable.

If economy and water are a concern to you the the 300 TDI would be my recommendation. Just as capable, twice as economical, just as comfortable but with a bit less power. Don't let the power worry you, the 300 tdi does a good job.
My D1 has airbags and cruise etc so look around. Prices are great at the moment.

If you can afford it, a D2a TD5 is a great machine.

    Cheers, Rick.

dont pick the vehicle based on the engine rather the rest of it.

the tdi200 is marginally better than the tdi300 but parts are getting scarce for them and realistically most of the tdi200 vehicles will be falling apart around the engine.

Prefer not to buy one only because you cant get new CH's any more, so if you cook it you will be hard pushed to find a replacement. The 200tdi and LT77 combo is as good as 300tdi R380 IMO.

I doubt you will get so lucky, but if you do find something as rare as an unmolested 200tdi rust free in great condition with service history, good engine, no smoke,at the right price... buy it!

Been having this conversation in other thread as well, where I have been educated on some 200TDI vs 300TDI benefits.

It seems there are a lot of people support the 200TDI. (More than I thought).

Amazes me how many people on here cook their engines , never have understood how you all do it so often that you won't but an engine based on the fact it might be hard to buy a new head for it for when you cook it .
