I have exactly the same problem with my 96 300tdi disco bigcarle. I'm thinking earth strap to, be keen to hear from others any advice on where to start.

the lights on my '95 disco 300TDi pulsate when the disco is on idle and less so when revving, would this be the earths?

Could be the earth.
I just diagnosed a bad earth on the weekend by using a jumper lead from the negative battery terminal to chassis, bulkhead and then gearbox.
My problem was slow cranking, turned out to be a bad lug on the main earth to the gearbox.

98% of all Land Rovers built are still on the road.
The other 2% made it home.
Cost difference between Britpart and Genuine seals: £2.04. Knowing that your brakes won't fail at any moment: Priceless.
The jumper cable test is what I usually suggest. It is quite likely an earth issue. Fixing earth issues are cheap and provide a whole lot of benefits.
Otherwise, the only other thing I can think of is the alternator, but go down the cheap path of spring the earth first.
