    sensitive parts of the discovery 1

    Hi all,

    How sturdy are the stock parts of a discovery when it comes to navigating hard off road tracks?

    We're heading out for a 3 day trip in our '92 200tdi Discovery this coming long weekend. While I've done everything I can think of to make the bus sturdy and capable, it's still quite stock.

    I'm worried that even going easy, the tough rock tracks and mud swamps of west Tassie are going to take its toll on the stuff I haven't upgraded yet such as the axels, CV's etc etc.

    Is there anything I should take particular note of with the Disco? I'm guessing the Axels are 10 spline from what I read as apposed to the 24 from later models - will these deal with the 200tdi when I need to get a bit torqy?

    drive it with some mechanical sympathy and you will be fine

    Same as what's been said. IMO it's not about how hard the track your driving is, it's about how hard you drive the vehicle.

    The only thing I have managed to break on our Disco 1 was a rear shock, it pulled in two after a bit of enthusiastic driving on the Cape Telegraph track, trying to get to a certain camp before nightfall. As the other guys have said, the vehicle will handle pretty much anything, (even in standard trim), but abuse usually ends in breakage, show some RESPECT, it pays.
    Most of the failures I have seen in all sorts of other "tuff" 4WD's on the OTL track each year I go up has been due to either lack of maintenance prior to the trip or simply pushing too hard along the way, or stopping at a place like "The Gunshot" and keeping playing hard until you break something, good fun until you are stuck and bruck.

    As has been said, if you look after your disco, it will look after you.

    You do have 10 spline axles but they are as sturdy as the 24' so don't worry about it.

    We're doing Pieman heads up from Granville, then bacjk down to trial on day two via Climes track. Third day is Montezuma & Ring River.

    I've been on them all (bar half of ring river. Damn tree!) but never driving my own.

    Respect the disco! Got it! haha!

    Nice. From what I've seen of that area you should be fine if you're sensible. In the summer just gone, we did the west coast in our Disco and had great fun. We even did Balfour solo vehicle (not recommended by everyone ). We have stock drive line and suspension on our Disco. We do have a snorkel which is needed for Balfour.
