    Doesn't like petrol

    Hey guys

My 97 3.9l v8 Disco (340,000k) has never ran great on petrol but always fine on lpg. Have just put up with it until recently, but after doing some research on this forum I decided to check the adjustments of my tps and MAF.
Only thing is now with both of those adjusted correctly (tps at .13v-5v and maf at 1.35v) it runs even worse. before adjustment it ran very rich and slightly hesitant on acceleration and now it immediately flounders as soon as you put your foot on the pedal.
Fitted new plugs last week, checked my vac advance and it is stuffed and my rotor button and cap look pretty worn. Would this cause the crap running on petrol or does it sound like a fuel thing.

    Cheers

    Rob

Ignition voltage requirements are usually higher for LPG so if it runs OK on gas I would be diagnosing petrol problems. Old injectors on a dual fuel engine usually carbon up and won't run on a properly adjusted EFI system. I'd be looking for a second hand set of injectors. You can use injectors off an EA-EL Falcon or a VN-VR Commodore if you have a friendly wreckers in your area. Reco bosch injectors are easy to source on ebay if you're interested. Can't remember exactly what they're off, someone will pipe up soon I bet.

No i haven't checked either the fuel temp sensor or the coolant temp sensor. What should a serviceable/kaput sensor indicate with the multimeter? and what colour wires are what. All my manual tells me is how to remove/install the sensors.
On a side note it actually drove a bit better on petrol today, still not 100% though

your suppose the run on petrol every so often the recommend.
I didn't bother and the injectors failed on a D1 I had, on removal a few injectors had lost the ends, of the injector, whether they melted or simply fell off I don' know but I wish I kept a photo of them. The pintel probably never closed and leaked fuel casing bad running on petrol.

Yeah i don't run it to often on petrol, only on the way to fill up with more gas, haha.
Is there any tips/tricks/special tools for changing the injectors? as i've never done it before. I imagine i'd need a gasket for the plenum

Cool Easy but a bit of a fiddle...

I wouldn't think you would need gaskets - the plenum is sealed with a good quality gasket maker (sensor safe). Easy job, but a bit fiddly. Off with the plenum, associated hoses, etc and lay to one side (passenger). Carefully remove the injector plugs and TPS connector. Remove negative from battery. Disconnect the fuel supply and return lines, and tuck them up out of the way. Take the hold down nuts from the fuel rail (4 No.) and ease the entire fuel rail upwards away from the inlet manifold. The injectors should come with it - a wriggle will help - as the injectors are clipped to the fuel rail and are a push fit in the manifold.

I've used 19lb Bosch gen3 injectors from the US - eBay $125 landed. They work very well. Or you can use Commo or Ford injectors as suggested above.

Reassemble in opposite order. Check plugs, leads and the rest of the ignition system carefully.

    Start it.
