    Disco wants me dead!!!

or more to the point the darn ABS!!!

Short version. Got a car, been fixing it up. It's the missus daily driver.
I had it today for work purposes.

This afternoon while coasting down a short decent to and T intersection I was surprised to find that when I applied pressure to the brake pedal, I had no brakes!!!
No cars in front of me and plenty of time to the intersection, I pushed the pedal hard, let of push harder again, rinse and repeat. Getting closer to the t intersection by now. No ABS fault registered, no light on the dash. NO BLOODY BRAKES either!!!
Under my foot was a constant grinding sensation from the abs not working???
Luckily I was able to coast through the intersection with no oncoming vehicles, and pull over on my left applying the handbrake.

The brakes just didn't work, even at low speeds the pedal just rumbled under my feet while nothing happens.
So out with the ABS fuse... brakes working (obviously no ABS thou).

I know fully dislike ABS to the point of infinity!!! It shocks me to think if all the variables were not in my favour at this given time what could have happened. Or even worse if it happened while the missus had the car with the boy on board. To say I was furious would be an understatement. But I was also relieved that it happen when it did, for the same reasons.

This is firstly a warning to all whom have ABS. Be careful!!!

Second up is I want to know if anyone else has any experience with this sort of severe malfunction of the ABS system?
Lastly, what could have caused this to happen. WHY DID THE ABS NOT REGISTER AN OBVIOUS FAULT AND DISABLE THE DARN SYSTEM SO I WAS ABLE TO STOP!!!

My advice is to remove the abs fuse and destroy the light in the dash! But obviously this isn't sound advice and I am just worked up given today's drama!!!

    Cheers

    Hi Grimace,

Unfortunalety this Wabco C system won't default to normal operation when this occurs, it just thinks there is a wheel locking up and pulses the brakes accordingly. It is due to an intermittent open circuit OR excessive air gap on one or more wheel sensors.

I agree very scary and very dangerous IMO

To avoid this happening until it can be tested/ rectified, you could unplug the ABS modulator multiplug, this will prevent any signal to the valve block and will avoid the pulsing issues. In short, your brakes will then operate as normal, but your Anti lock light will be illuminated.

Well then I know where I will be looking! Back to the front Pass side sensor as that has given similar fault codes in the past. Which I thought I had fixed!!!

How the system doesn't over ride such a fault instantly is down right ridiculous.

I had this problem when off road and could not stop at an intersection and went straight though on many occasions. I pulled the fuse which gave me nice predictable brakes gain. It was only mainly used off road I never put the fuse back in again. There have been a lot of people with similar stories, let hope every one has as much luck as you and comes out safely. I have no faith in D1 ABS.
    Cheers, David.

I used to get this problem alot especially on steep down hill descents off road..

since replacing all my wheel sensors one after the other, touch wood the brakes have been great for years.

the problem I had for a long time is it could never be recreated and no one ever bloody believed me....I had it happen once going in to a T intersection as well I had to pull up the hand brake to stop me..

but everytime the car went in to the garage they tested the brakes and they were like its fine.....we ended up finding a faulty wheel sensor. it happened again and that was due to an open circuit
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

Yep happened to Teena once going into a roundabout all good .
Rick fixed the problem and i put a inline switch right hand side of the steering wheel so i could turn the ABS on and off.

Thanks for that! (directed to Grimace's D1...) - My Classic which runs a WABCO system has done the hard pedal/growling-pulsating/minimal stopping thingy to me twice before, but taking off the hoof and trying again worked.

According to the paper-clip and blink code diagnostic, my RH front sensor is the culprit... but as I'm Old School and prefer non-ABS, the TC and ABS faults are of no importance. - So far the TC bulb has burned out, waiting for the ABS one to follow.

Mine is the WABCO elecric pressure pump-accumulator-ABS modulator block system, I think the D1 uses vacuum for its 'oomph, so pulling a fuse on mine might not do the trick...

Sure you have'nt been mean and unkind to your D1 in recent times ?

    - First week I had mine, she loosened all her wheel nuts on the highway... but I treated her to a tension wrench instead of rattle gun and we're All Good now. - They just need to feel loved.....
