Question What Year Did Cat Converters Start?

Sounds like a silly question I know but I have a 96 (April built) 3.9 V8 that has the Cat light on the instrument panel that lights up for ign then goes off. Everywhere I've looked so far seems to say that I should have them, 1 on each side of the front section of exhaust, but it doesn't.
It has 2 silencer (muffler) boxes on the whole exhaust (1 large & 1 small like an old fashioned hot-dog at the end) & that's it, could somebody have removed the front section & replaced it with a pre-cat one. If so could/would that effect the running of my wagon?
    Thanks

ps the whole system looks reasonably new.

Australian delivery D1's didn't get cats, ever. North America did.

Ah thanks for that, was curious as my Haynes manual said they did but I wasn't sure. Do you know if removing the larger "muffler" & replacing with a smaller "hot-dog" would make any running difference aside from probably sounding better/louder?

Steelo, you know the best thing you can do to a Haynes w/shop manual is paint it green and throw it into tall grass, no really, Regards Frank.
