Thread: Clutch alignment

A piece of dowel slightly smaller in diameter than the smallest diameter in the system (usually the spigot bush) then wrap electricians tape around the down in the right spots to built up to the required diameter.

I have used the same one for 30 years on a whole lot of different vehicles adding or removing tape as required. Mine is wrapped around an old socket ratchet handle.

So if you cannot find a suitable tool - make your own.

Garry is right, this method works well.
I've used it on every thing from old Holdens to tractors and even on a twin plate marine gearbox.

I use a piece of tent pole the same size as the smallest diameter of the clutch plate. It is very close to the size of the spigot. Just make sure there are no burrs on the tube. Carefully take a slight amount of metal off one end & mke tube about 12 inches (300mm) long so you can remove.

See if you can find a old main sharft out of the same g/box...
I've got 1 from a box re-build that i use, so no tape needed.

I'm in Sunbury an have an alignment tool. I didn't use it when I rebuilt my engine - used a deep socket instead - but it came into its own last week when I did a box swap with the engine still in place. PM me if you would like to borrow it.
