    Maf and Faff!

    Hey guys,

I've previously posted about my 96 disco1 v8 not running great on petrol (hunting at idle, running rich and slightly hesitant on acceleration) the list of things i've done so far:
    new plugs and leads
new dizzy cap and rotor button
checked and adjusted voltage on the MAF/TPS
replaced the IAC (which by the way has given me an extra 50kms a tank on LPG)

still not quite right on petrol though it seems to run better in the morning. Tried unplugging the MAF today and the car ran exactly the same with it unplugged as with it plugged in! Is this normal? i thought the car wouldn't run at all with the maf disconnected.
Anyway looks like its stuffed, my question is: new or second hand? I can get a generic new one from europart in the UK for $120 or a second hand one from all four by four spares for $160. I have heard the new ones are all made in China and not the best

Try getting a reconditioned MAF from somewhere reputable rather than a cheap new one. I found that the new ones that can be found on the cheap (on eBay etc) weren't much cop on my old D1 V8.

I took the punt and ordered the cheap one from the UK, has to be better than the unit in the vehicle and I didn't want to pay the $370+ for a reco'd one.

Oh well i'll see how it go's and post my success/failure

Most important: A MAF MUST have 12V to it all the time the engine is running otherwise the ECU runs in limp mode. Then if you run on gas and switch to petrol the engine won't run properly. The diagnostic is to 1. switch the engine off hot, switch to petrol and start. If the engine runs fine then you have probably no power on gas to the MAF. Then 2. test the brown/orange stripe wire going to the MAF plug and see if there is 12V-14V when the engine is running on gas. If no power you must cut the wire to the MAF and run a new wire from the brown/orange stripe wires before the petrol injector cut-off relay.
