Temperature Guage, its weird
Ok, so during normal warmup my temp guage climbs up to about 2/3 slowly then all of a sudden drops back to half were it would sit all day no matter the load on the engine, just recently I tuned the maf and the tps then cleaned the IAC valve, now after warmup it still does the same thing however after a while under load now it climbs to 2/3 and hovers there, if I stop on side of road it slowly goes back to half at idle and will sit there, when I start driving up it goes again, I thought to myself I have a problem, so to better inform myself I bought a laser thermometer, and after going over it im not so sure, here goes, ok warmed the car up to operating temperature when the needle dropped back to half and did a check 72 deg at the sender 74 deg at the thermostat, off I went for a drive and I caned the old girl hard till I bought the needle on the temp guage up to just over 2/3 were it stayed, so out I get and into it with the laser, 88deg at the sender and 89-90 at the thermostat, 80 deg at each end of the radiator, hmmmm so I let her idle till temp guage once again read 1/2, tested again 74 deg at sender 76deg at thermostat 68-70 each side of radiator, out for a caning again, same results.
Am I going mad, I have checked the earth on the engine and even added another, same thing, could my temp sender be that faulty or is it just that stock LR guages are crap, either way, im sure the engine isnt getting too hot dispite what the needle says, its just funny how this surfaced after doing a little tuning

Further to the above, I was just sitting on a milkcrate in the shed (cant afford a chair, all spare money goes into Disco) having a think, Question, would the MAF adjustment effect the timing, my thought is this, if the previous owner set the timing while the MAF voltage wss at 3.3v (which is what it wss before I reset it) would me changing it to 1.3v inneffect change the timing he set it at, im aware you need to move dizzy to set timing, just wondering if an electrical change would have any effect, now before you go and say check it, I dont have a light yet and even if I did I have no idea how to do it.... just running things through my head is all....

My guess, crappy Land Rover gauge.
I had the exact same symptoms on my Disco 1 (Diesel but the same gauge) Having since fitted an engine saver and aftermarket water temp gauge, I have had my coolant temp well over 100 with not a flicker on the stock gauge, and had the same gauge hit the redline while head and water temps were about 87! Stock gauge went up to 3/4 tonight (driving on the level, in the rain, at about 16 degrees) while the others stayed steady. And I have had it rise up and down when changing the load on other circuits, like switching the aircon or lights on and off, and I'm talking as I press the switch, not after they've been on for a minute or so. I would invest in an aftermarket gauge to know exactly what your engine is doing. I also read somewhere that Land Rover engineered the gauge with about 15+ degrees lag so when the engine temps changed it wouldn't frighten the posh drivers they expected to be driving their vehicles. As any mechanic knows, temperatures fluctuate wildly depending on the conditions. Just my two cents worth.

Thanks Lane, I did go out and buy a guage, have plummed it in but the sender supplied with it is a 1/8 npt and the stock sender is a 5/8 unf so its off tomorrow to find an adaptor, will see how it faurs then, thanks for the input

If you cant find an adapter, I just slipped the sender unit in one of the coolant hoses exiting the thermostat housing. Do the hose clamp nice and tight it shouldn't leak.

I saw a grab kit full of temp guage adapters at Mornington Autobarn. The grab kit was made by SPECO. If you have a good auto shop near you they should be able to source a temperature adapter for you.
Failing that VDO should still have adapters available for their guages.
