Talking Can I swop rear tail shafts.

I have a 99 300tdi and a 99 V8. I notice that the diesel has the rubber mounting on the rear tail shaft. The V8 does not. A quick measure tells me the actual shafts are about same length. The only obvious difference being the rubber coupler. I just replaced the coupler at a cost of about $100 and it is my understanding this has to be one on a regular basis.

Can I, without too much difficulty, with limited tools and mechanical ability, swop them over?

Is there a benefit from doing same (other than cost)?

Is it really worth doing as the vehicle will get VERY VERY limited hard off road use.

    Cheers
    Pete.

    Pete,
I have a prop shaft from an 80's range rover, and I swapped it over onto my '97 Disco.

I did it because I have a 2" lift and it cost me nothing, and to replace the rubber donut was about 30GBP.

So I did it out of neccessity, however, if it is of any help, the uni-joints are substantially larger than the original disco ones, and the angle of operation is larger due to the larger separation of the uni-joint carrier.

Just google the process of how to do it, there are plenty of step-by-step how-to's. Oh and make sure you have a torque wrench to do the retaining bolt back up to the required torque (130Nm I think) as this sets the pinion bearing preload. Oh and loctite it. It is a very easy job.

    Cheers, Adam.

    Also I forgot to mention
Yes, take your time (removing the metal locating cone thingy can be tricky)
Yes, make sure you have the right size socket!!!!!! And you will require a lengthy breaker bar.
    Yes.

Oh and get a friend to push (HARD) on the brakes when you try to pop the piston nut.
