Question Indicator Not Cancelling Out Early Enough

Hi There.. My first post here so please be kind I've used the search function with no results unfortunately.

Basically my "new" 98 D1 300tdi's indicators only cancel out if I've turned the steering wheel an entire rotation or so. It's to the point where I have to manually turn the LH or RH indicator off on most corners.. only on really tight corners will it automatically cancel out..

I've been driving a 95 Defender for a while and have never had this problem. Is this just a Disco 1 thing that I need to live with or is something amiss here?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Mine now does this also, but I had it 11yrs. Didn't used to, but since I have recently had the steering will off several times for various repairs I suspect the cancelation ring which sits behind the indicator switches has worn lugs to turn the indicators off every time? I am just putting up with it currently?? So no it shouldn't do it?

Phew! It was starting to bug me so I guess it's a good thing that it's not supposed to be that way.

I'm half way through pulling the steering wheel off and also the stalk assembly so I'll report back with my findings. Kind of on a wild goose hunt here though so if anyone knows the cause please chime in!!

    Talking

Good timing, I just came across THIS post over at lr4x4.com

They mention both a DIY fix and using that part.

There is also a bloke in the UK selling machined cancel rings on eBay. He has an airbag model HERE but also says he can do non-airbag versions.

The above info is just FYI for people reading this in the future

I'll rip mine apart tomorrow and go from there! It's kind of time sensitive as I need a RWC so I'll check and see how much ULR want for one first

Hi & welcome to the forum. I have fitted the machined type to my non airbaged D1 & is working like a dream.
    Regards Shane.
P.S. Sorry but forgot to say the guy selling the machined ones has is very fast with delivery.

    Thanks for that info Shane!

I have ordered that part from the UK and will post up some pictures of installation once it arrives!

ULR wanted $90 for the original part that had failed in the first place.. so $32 for the machined upgrade with shipping was a nice option

Quite easy job to do. Once steering wheel is off & the old part is off the rear of steering wheel you will need an allen to tighten grub screw. What part off Melbourne are you in?

Cool cool, I was wondering because I can't seem to find any other info on it on the web. Sounds easy enough.

Just near the CBD in Middle Park

    Thumbs up Arrived

The part arrived a few days ago. I am really impressed with the part and so far has fixed the problem completely. It's also nice knowing that I've got a stronger part in there that won't break like the LR plastic ones.

Was really easy to install.. in fact it felt like child's play considering we were doing the head gasket and timing belt at the same time..

    Here are a few pics
