    D1 200tdi Air con question

    Hi All

    I have a 92 Disco 1 200 Tdi

The air con does not work , but before I get raped by a air con company. Need to ask some questions and check the simple things first

Does the compressor make a noise when it starts ( IE you turn on the air con in car) as mine does not, if this is not right what do you suggest may be the cause

Also when off roading and bouncing the car about a bit on rocks the air con worked for a bit , not really cold be colder than it has been. Then stopped and back to how it was.

    Any ideas or suggestions welcome

    Cheers

Check under the bonnet to make sure the magnetic clutch is actually working properly.
Engine running, switch A\C on and watch to ensure the compressor is actually being turned.

Next problem would most likely be the usual leaking seals at the compressor crankshaft, that one is a replace and regas job, sorry.

Other than that, there's not a lot that can stop them from working, the rest of the system is just heat exchangers really. No moving parts in them to wear and break down.

    Ok really stupid question

How do you know if the compressor is being turned , the belt on the front turns seems to turn and it seems to show no different signs if the AC is on or off.

if it is the same as the 300tdi then a solenoid pulls the clutch in on the compressor pulley assembly

feel free to drop me a PM if brisbane puts you within reasonable range of the switch....

the clutch is in the middle of the compressor puuley when you power up the compressor by turning on the AC it engages the outer driven half of the pully to the crank of the compressor.

the first test is to apply 12v straight to the compressor and listen for it to clunk. if it does this then start the engine and run high idle for about 20 seconds. with the fans on low. while this is happening watch the glass on the reciever drier, if you see bubbles and snot being blown through it your system has a leak and has just lost gas.

you might get lucky and it might just be a dodgy connection or fuse but I suspect that it will be out of gas and the low pressure cut out is kicking in.
